What happens when you drive away with the gas nozzle still in your car and pull the hose out of the gas pump. By The Horse.

My protocol when I gas up is to run into the gas station store and buy some Gatorade, and perhaps cigs, if I need them. That means that I have to remember to finish pumping my gas when I get back to the car. But if I'm thinking of something else, I worry that I might drive off with the nozzle in my car. I've always wondered what would happen if someone drive off the the nozzle in the car, and today I learned. The folks at the gas station were joking about a man who had done it earlier in the day. I asked if his insurance pays for the damage. They explained to me that the gas pump and hose are equipped with a "quick release" mechanism. If there is no damage to the nozzle, then everyone is relieved, and nobody has to pay for anything. If the nozzle is damaged or broken, then the distracted driver (and/or his/her insurance) has to pay. Remember that you learned it from The Horse! Have you ever almost driven away with the gas nozzle still in your car?

Wonderful news directly from the Horse's mouth! I never self fill, so it's never happened to me and never will.

@DianneN I bet he enjoys it. Men secretly like "taking care of" their wives.

Do they still have gas stations with "attendants" where you live?

@TheHorse Yes, but I have to drive for 8 minutes to get to one. So my husband is in charge of filling the cars. lol

@rebelann No, I like conducting "experiments," but that's not one I would do.

I've never driven off with the nozzle still in the car, but I once drove off with the gas cap on the trunk back in the days before they were attached to the car. Didn't realize what I'd done until the next time I went to buy gas.

@TheHorse I suppose so. If you know anyone who needs a gas cap for a 1965 Malibu, they can look alongside Eastwood Road in Wilmington, NC between Market Street and the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge.

We've driven away from the drive-in with the speaker still in the car. Will that do?

@TheHorse The cord pulled out of the speaker but they didn't seem too concerned. They just said it happened all the time.

Heh. I worry that I'll do it some day. I'm often "lost in thought" when I do things that are fairly automatic.

This is interesting. I wonder how many times it has happened to Taxi drivers or Uber, Lyft and the ones who deliver food? Actually it would be interesting to see what the stats are for this

I cannot remember if I did, or almost did. If so there were no repercussions. It would have been about forty five years ago, though. Maybe I just saw someone else do it as I cannot imagine doing it myself. I am too compulsive about things.

I tend to be pretty compulsive about "getting things right." But I also get "lost in thought" sometimes.

They might have a quick release now but several years ago they didn't. One of my friends did this and she ended up having to pay for what her insurance company wouldn't.

Heh. I think I acatually did that once as well. No. I filled my tank, but didn't notice that the pump hadn't worked, until about 5 miles down the road.

@TheHorse To make sure all is well. Sometimes a pump will just stop.

Not me, but my friend did that! She was exhausted out of her mind (long story). Her mind was "not there" after pumping the gas . . . she actually took off with the nossle/hose and the gas station owners demanded that she pay for the damages.

Yep, if there's damage, I reckon the driver has to pay.

When I drove ages ago in NYC most of the gas stations still had service and I did not have to pump myself.

I pumped my gas when living in CA or traveling but always did it first or went into the store first then out to pump. Here in Oregon, they pump for us so no worries. I always wondered if gas would pour out or something if a hose was pulled out.

I've noticed that when I drive through Oregon. Do you know the reason? As for the danger, I think it can vary from none to a car fire!

No, I have never done that but I am glad to hear they have an automatic quick release on them just in case.
