In days of yore - Campbell Town, Tasmania

When we were in Tasmania, recently we came across these great road installations in the area of Campbell Town. I had to take the photos from the car as we drove by so there wasn’t time for niceties such as zooming up or focussing really well. I think they are just tin cutouts but they are very nicely done. The town used to be a staging post and the inn, The Foxhunter’s Return, was built by convicts. A second-hand and antique bookshop occupies the extensive cellars under the hotel. Judging by the last of the installations, maybe they had the odd bushranger in the area.

The third one is very impressive from a distance. It's set up on a hill and visible for quite some distance.

The first photo is great : due to the backlight one would think that this scene is real So, there was not only Tasmanian devils but also Tasmanian bandits? Charming place for holidays.

I love the tree and scenery in the second one so I didn't crop it any more.

@snowy22315 I've read about them and seen photos. I'd love to see one 'for real'.

So, a bushranger is an outlaw? You guys drove by too quickly to stop for a look at the second-hand shop? What if there was a great, one-of-a-kind buy there? You missed it! I like all three of the cutouts, Judy. Thank you for sharing them with us!

@JudyEv So... how often have you and Vince rustled cattle or sheep? Were they good?

Yes. A bushranger 'ranged the bush' and might have stolen cattle and/or horses. They also held up the stage-coaches and robbed the passengers, stole the mail or any gold bullion etc.

Those are interesting sculptures and makes you think about the country you're going through. I think you did well with the photos.

@JudyEv I'm sure it was hard to find a place to stop, but you did a great job with those pictures through your windscreen.

I took a lot through the windscreen. When you are towing a caravan it can be hard to find a safe place to pull off.

@JudyEv yes they look realistic. I expect if I saw them without warning I might think there is actual fighting going on at first

I guess I knew they weren't real so it never occurred to me that someone might think they were.

Very interesting to have these cutouts to remind us of our past. Obviously, you made a quick getaway and that accounts for the lower picture quality of the third photo! siva

We were some distance from the last cutout so I cropped it a lot but it possibly looks better further away.

Those tin cutouts not only relieve a boring drive, but make you muse over things of the remote past.

That's true. The stage-coaches were an important form of transport in the early days.

@judyev I don’t know why but those scenes make me want to go and live in Tasmania back in the day. Strange. Couldn’t tolerate the long flight to get there. Ah! Steam ship- that’s how I’ll go.

I don't know about steamship. Maybe ocean liner? Or catch an ocean-going yacht.
