My Wonky Sleep Pattern or Lack There Of....

I have a bad sleep pattern. It is the part the twins fault. Ever since they were 2 months old they have always stayed up all night long and tried to sleep all day long. When they were 2 months old they both got RSV (infant version of the flu). Since then they have slept better during the day and stayed awake at night. They like to stay up at night and get into things and then sleep late into the day. During this non-sleep time, they bother me to no end. I cannot go to sleep because if I do, they wake me up or they get into trouble. So, I have been staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning with them. By 4 am Keith is ready to get up to go to work. I am dead on my feet but I get his breakfast and lunch ready for the day. After doing this, I am wide awake again and normally I cannot go back to sleep for 2 or 3 hours. When I finally do go to sleep I sleep as long as I can but normally that is just until 11 or 12. I am to the point that I feel drained and no matter how much I sleep in on the weekends I still am not getting enough sleep. Once they go back to school their sleep pattern will revert back because they will stay so busy during the day they will be too tired to stay up late at night. I just hope that I can get mine back in sync as well. Anyone else have sleep issues?

@ridingbet when school starts back and the twins are back on a regular schedule I am sure I will be able to get some sleep at night as well. It is good that you can be roused easily.

Have you tried keeping them super busy during the day so they will sleep at night instead of during the day? I'm sorry you're having such a problem with sleep. Since it's only me, I sleep when I need to.

@just4him No, I am too tired most of the time. On the days that I have tried, it does not affect them and they still stay up late.

Several weeks ago I was going through insomnia. For three weeks I think I hardly slept at all. But these days I'm back to sleeping at 10pm and I can sleep fully well at night without getting bothered by any noise at all. You are lucky you have the weekend to sleep. I work on weekends so I couldn't sleep longer than I wanted.

@toniganzon Did you do something different in order to get your pattern changed or did it just happen naturally?

I do not sleep well, I go to sleep always at the same time (around 10:30/11 p.m.) and I wake up at 5 a.m., but I only sleep 2 to 3 hours without waking up.

@LadyDuck I am sorry to hear this. Is there anything in particular that wakes you up or just sleep issues in general.

@LadyDuck I go back and forth with this issue myself. When I am in a sound sleep stage it takes quite a bit to wake me up but that does not happen often. Once I wake up it is very hard for me to get back to sleep.

I couldn't do it, I made my kids stay awake during the days so they would sleep at night, my body has never gotten more than 3 -6 hrs of sleep a night though so I sit up until about 2 am and get up around 7 even now. I hope you will get to start sleeping better soon.

I do. I have a 10-month old baby boy. Sleep is a far away dream for me. 3 hours straight sleep is a blessing. I survive barely in power naps.

@moichan Congratulations babies are so wonderful. You have a good reason to be up so much! I love those power naps and you should get as many as you can.

Oh, that sounds awful. Too bad you cannot have them swim all afternoon every afternoon in the summer. I always found that made my kiddos sleep.

@marlina As soon as the kids go back to school it should work itself out. The twins will be tired and go to sleep at night.

You must really be dragging yourself through the day with your sleep being so interrupted. School starts again soon does't it?

So then how old are they now? You make it sound like they've been in school already but I'd that's the case is think their sleep pattern was already fixed. My sleep is awry when I'm unable to sleep because the wounds on my foot is aching. I had an awful night earlier in the week and have slept extra these past few days and at night. Right now my foot is aching again and I'm hoping I can sleep fine later. If not I don't return to work until Tues so can sleep some tomorrow or Sunday after church. They do say that we can't bank sleep or ever catch up on what was lost even though we keep trying. Can't Keith get his own breakfast and lunch on days that you're up with the twins? It's you got sick from lack of sleep he'd have to do that and much more. You may want to consider that.
