Ten Movies “Everybody” Saw — Except Me: Deliverance (#3)

It’s funny how things that were mentioned in discussions yesterday are resurfacing today. Case in point: yesterday John Roberts mentioned the song “Dueling Banjos.” Today, look what’s showing up on the list of “classic” movies that it seems everyone’s seen, except me? Here it is. #3: Deliverance Back in the 60s there were a mess-a “rural” comedies, ranging from The Andy Griffith Show to Gomer Pyle, USMC to The Beverly Hillbillies to Petticoat Junction. The classic Hee Haw even started on CBS as a summer replacement show. Then CBS decided that rural comedies were too “old-fashioned” and canned them all. Result: people got their dose of “rural” viewing with this thing. I don’t know if people “do that” with pigs. Most of the southerners I know would rather eat bacon, so that’s not what they mean when they say the ”love pork.” Obviously I know the plot of the film, as well as “that scene.” And, while I laughed (and still laugh) at the notion of a small barbecue joint in Kansas City being named “Squeal Like a Pig” (or S.L.A.P. for short), I’d rather see Burt Reynolds driving around with Jerry Reed and Sally Field. Deliverance Directed by John Boorman Released in 1972 Here’s John’s discussion about the best-known song from the movie:
In previous series focusing on instrumentals, I was remiss in not mentioning “Dueling Banjos” from the 1972 movie “Deliverance.” The tune was composed in 1954...

There are also a lot of movies that "everybody has seen" that I haven't, but I finally got around to watching Deliverance a few years ago. I think the book would be better.

Deliverance was sure a scary movie in it's way. Some of the areas around here..I half expect to see the crew from Deliverance showing up. It's kinda wild around here in places.

Yeah, and it spawned that classic bumper sticker, "Paddle faster, I hear banjos."

Finally! The film is a journey into man's heart of darkness. Not cartoon violence like Tarantino.

I have seen this movie a few times and my favorite part is the banjo. You did not miss an awesome movie at all.

Deliverance really isn't a film on a huge box office/popularity scale like Jaws, Rocky, etc. You aren't alone here.

Picky Wedia says it was the #5 box office grossing film of 1972. There are a few other interesting things about it: the entry says they wanted Sam Peckinpah to direct it, so that means the arrow gets shot in super-slow motion. And that they wanted people like Brando (don’t even wanna think about him with a southern accent), Lee Marvin, and Charlton Heston (“soylent pig squealing is people!”) in the film. Heston may have been a good idea: “Take your stinking paws off of me, you damn dirty southerner.”

@FourWalls Not box office like The Godfather which was the same year but a tidy sum. Is it any more gross than waking up with a horse head in bed with you?

I have never seen this one either. Although I am also familiar with "that scene" and the plot of the film.

Nope, haven't seen it. Seems I've missed a lot of films - many the same ones you've missed.
