Latest food trend in Japan, Pink chicken curry

yummy, gross, food, curry

Some people can't stand the yellow color coriander gives to curry so a Japanese company decided to make a curry that is pink in color. I guess coriander is replaced with powdered beets to make this girly pink color. I just tried it and it tasted like regular chicken curry but it looks like a dessert since pink is usually color of a dessert item. Do you think you can stomach eating this? This is an instant curry powder mix you will simmer vegetables and meat with.

Though aesthetically it is looking good it may take sometime for me to accept this dish as the color is not very attractive for a Chicken Item!

Pink is more acceptable color for an cupcake icing, not a chicken dish. It tasted like normal curry but it looks like pepto bismol.

@CaptAlbertWhisker , yes I agree! That is why I was saying that may take some time! In India except for Ice creams and Cakes we normally don't have this type of pink color used in food items!

@AKRao24 I always wonder what Indians think of curries outside India. I mean you guys invented curry and the whole world made their own versions.

How can people not stand the normal curry color - that's the way it always is - what's not to like ? This pink stuff looks really weird - like pink slime on rice. What brand of curry was this - I haven't seen this in the stores (yet). I don't know how well this would sell here . . . maybe it's super expensive now but I will find it in the clearance section if I wait .

They think the yellow and orange color reminds them of poop. So they think making it look like peptobismol is much more palatable.

You know, it is not the coriander that gives the yellow colour it is the turmeric, the coriander is green.

@LadyDuck Its yellow in where I grew up. I think you are talking about the leaves and I am talking about the seeds.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Coriander powder is not yellow, I have it in the kitchen, is very light green/brownish, turmeric is bright yellow.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I should get some. I used to use them in my blue cheese salads. I feel like I'm oxidizing all the time.

@TheHorse I use them on making red velvet cake. The original recipe uses beets instead of red food color.

Japanese can indeed become creative in presenting their food. I certainly am interested to taste it. Just by looking at the picture it taste like sweet to me but I guess it has a different taste in reality.

Hmm... well, I don't want to judge before I try it. Pink is quite unusual. I don't really mind the original yellow. But I guess I can understand if some don't like it. I guess if it tastes the same then it's fine. But I might just try it once and go back to the usual one. I think I'll feel the same way if they come up with a blue one.

They already come out with a blue one and it looks like gross chemically paint. They have green one where green tea replaced coriander.

I heard it tasted like generic Japanese curry but its pink because of beetroots replacing the turmeric.

Nope, I still prefer the yellow color. You are correct pink color is more associated with desserts and also beverages. As for my main dish I prefer more natural color.

Also the sauce is so thick you cannot see the meat and vegetables anymore.
