Smoky view from Skinner's Butte

Eugene, Oregon
August 16, 2018 4:19pm CST
My city of Eugene was founded by Eugene Skinner. Once upon a time it was called "Skinner's Mudhole," but it was decided that his first name would suffice. Our air quality this week is very poor, with over 100 fires in the western US, not to mention British Columbia fires which assisted in making the state of Washington have the worst air in the nation yesterday. We were out yesterday morning, so I wanted to see how the view was from Skinner's Butte, overlooking downtown. We would love some of that Oregon rain.

It is a fine panoramic view of the city, which makes you forget the fires.

True, but much nicer when there is no smoke.

It's a pretty view but it looks like smoke in the distance.

Smoke has stayed pretty high here, but it is very hazy.

@JamesHxstatic We haven't had any fires here this summer that I know of. It's rained too much for anything to get dried out enough to burn.

Yes, there are none currently within 75 miles of us, but the prevailing winds blow it in to many cities.

Smoke from a big fire/s can travel a long way. We can sometimes smell the smoke from fires that might be quite some miles away.

Yes, the winds carried some of the western smoke as far as New York.

@JamesHxstatic It's when ash and burnt leaves start falling that it's getting a bit close for comfort. But even those can get carried a long way.

You surely need rain to clean up the air.

When I first read that last sentence, I thought you said you wanted to see the view from Skinner's BUTT! I was like, "Whoa...TMI." lol
