Ever tried cutting your own hair?

I've never really been particular on haircuts. I don't know about the different styles. I don't have my hair colored, or straightened, or curled. I don't even blow dry it.
So cut it myself? Why not? :P
The first time I tried it, I just tied it in a ponytail, leaned forward, flipped it over my head so I can see it in front of me, and chopped off several inches from the end.
I guess I was lucky (because I didn't really know what I was doing - so don't try it unless you don't mind the result, whatever it is :P ) but apparently, it turned out ok. Ended up having a sort of layered look.
The next times I cut my hair, I just comb it down, part in the middle, put each half in front so I can see the ends, and keep my head level so I can more or less cut the left and right halves straight. I usually wear my hair in a ponytail anyway, so it's not so obvious if I failed to make it straight. :P
Right now, though, I haven't cut my hair in quite a while. It's super long now - I can sit on it... (Also, I must look like the stereotypical evil witch now, hahaha.)
Part 2 tomorrow. ;)
Picture attached is an experiment on adding images. I took the picture vertically. Checking to see if it will attach right side up.

@LadyDuck Ah! I see.
I guess my motivations are more shallow. Hahaha! Like I said, I'm not very particular about it at all. So I don't feel I want to really 'learn' it, but just be able to do it. After all, I don't intend to cut anyone else's hair.
But good for you!

I haven't tried cutting my own hair ever since, maybe this is the reason why my hair is long.

I tried that technique once and the first time I tried it, it went well. But then I wanted to cut some more and the second time didn't work out as I imagined and cut it too short. Lesson learned, get someone professional.

a friend who worked in the middle east for the first time learned that's how ofws do it - tie in a pony, bend down, then cut straight across and you end up with layered hair.

I never tried on my hair. I trim my daughters hair some times. The worst was when my husband got a electric trimmer and asked me to help him. It went so fast that I shaved his head on one side.

Actually, no. I usually had short hair.
I only began to have long hair when I became (a) broke, and paying for a trip to the salon became a non-priority , and (b) lazy to go whether or not I had money.
Another confession is... I don't shampoo my hair everyday. Once a week is actually the norm. (Unless I go into the smoggy city, then I might do more than once.) But during that once, I use several handfuls. :P And I find it's better to use a separate conditioner, not just the 2-in-1s.
Combing/brushing isn't so bad either. Usually start from the ends and go up. :)

@hereandthere I don't even remember when I last cut it... But maybe a year or more.
I don't feel it's heavy, unless I'm crouched down and accidentally step on it, then try to get up. And I guess it helps that I live in the mountains where it's a little cooler.

@moirai so how many years did it take to grow that? it would feel too heavy and hot for me.
