Planning ahead

Today is herb class. I will be out the door in a half hour. While we were on our parts road trip yesterday I got calls and e mails about substituting all next week. I told them "yes" on this one, just because I want to see the inside of the school. And they are desperate with a para sick in the hospital and it is the start of the school year. The pay will not be great, but I will do it. So I am trying to make some healthy foods today that I can package up to have when I am working. I will also check my wardrobe and select some clothes. It is the only way I keep my sanity. I have to do employment paperwork for that school as well. It is a different school district but the same Special Education Co op. I was also offered a permanent full time job in the other direction, riding the bus every morning with a child with multiple handicaps. I think I shall pass on it. I would have to leave my house at 6 in the morning, but would be paid less than two hours work. I would be tied down, as well. Nope, I think I will stick to subbing when I want. I am planning to visit my daughter in October. I want to be free to go.

I am glad you turned that down. It's just so hard on you to be up that early and deal with everything else. I look forward to hearing about herb class.

Can you imagine everything we ate was made with basil? Our iced tea was lemon basil. We had tortellini served cold with pesto. Even dessert included basil. It was panna cotta drizzled with basil syrup.

@AmbiePam She suggested we use basil when making grape jam, as well. Personally, I am going to use Cinnamon Basil in whole berry cranberry sauce.

@GardenGerty That is cool (I think). I never would have imagined basil syrup.

I have thought about subbing once I am finished with this job. I would probably work in the elementary schools. The high school isn't one I would want to be in. Worked as an administrative assistant for almost 9 years and when I was done, I was done.

@GardenGerty when I was the sub caller for the district, Middle School was one place that wasn't easily filled when a sub was needed. The first thing they would ask was where and some mornings I would go through the entire list of subs and not find one person to fill the slot.

@ElusiveButterfly When driving bus I found that middle school kids wanted to prove how much they knew and could do. By the time kids were high school, if they were riding the bus, they knew it was not cool to mess with the driver, and that it would not make them look smart at all.

I honestly believe that Middle School is worse than High School. They always need good subs in most districts.

Subbing sounds like it gives you more freedom.

I can say "no" if I want to, or have to, but I am such a softie I likely will not. Ideally I will work no more than three days per week. Next week, of course, is an exception. The regular para is in the hospital and will be all week.

The full-time job sounds very restrictive and just for two hours or less. I'd be passing on that one too.

I like to earn, I like to accommodate, but I would spend almost as much time commuting as I would working. It would usually be easy duty, but I do not want to leave the house at 6 a. m.

Subbing can be good. It lets you work when you want and be off when you need to be. Herb class sounds interesting. Enjoy it.

Herb class is what I would love to go to. Subbing is the way, until flu season starts.

Today we talked about basil, and sunflowers. Sunflowers are one of the few sources of b12 that is not animal protein. I guess she meant the seeds. We tried a pesto made with sunflower seeds.

My friends who substitute teach say they love the flexibility it gives them. Many are retired teachers and enjoy keeping an hand in and the extra money.

If I did not need money, I would just stay home. I would prefer to work no more than three days a week. I only agreed to this because it is such an awkward beginning to the school year.
