Another weekend is here. Lots of places are back to school, which means things are picking up where I work. That’s good! And here’s another classic movie that’s good enough to have been seen by the masses. Even I’ve seen it!
#6: The Ten Commandments
My annual chuckle: the classic epic about the beginning of the religious holiday of Passover is shown every Easter. Occasionally that means the movie airs a month before Passover. Oh, well.
The “classic” version of The Ten Commandments is a remake. It was originally filmed in the 1920s as a silent movie. Cecil B. DeMille directed that one, too. I don’t think ABC could cram two hours’ worth of commercials into that original, though....
Enough jokes. I love this film. Charlton Heston’s role as Moses is one of his greatest performances (which he later outclassed in his Oscar-winning role in Ben-Hur [and yes, I’ve seen that one, too....fabulous flick!]). The special effects, which were amazing for their time, won an Oscar. (Quick trivia about the special effects: the hail that falls on Pharaoh as one of the plagues was popcorn.)
The story is timeless, too.

Directed by Cecil B. DeMille
Released in 1956

It's Ten Commandments at Easter and Ben Hur at Christmas.

@JohnRoberts — because nothing says “merry Christmas” like a chariot race!

@JohnRoberts Back in the day in my homeland they teamed Ben Hur with Spartacus. As a child I found both movies frightening - even though spectacular.

As a believer, I think Brynner had the line in the movie: “his God is God.”

I have seen this one several times. It's a grand epic and state of the art in its day though a bit hokey special effects wise today. Yul Bryner was terrific and Edward G. Robinson excellent.

I thought Vincent Price was good as well, out of his “stereotypical” horror role.

@FourWalls It had such a large cast of great actors. It's an all-star movie. From the sultry (Anne Baxter, Yvonne Decarlo, Debra Paget) to beefcake (Heston, Yul John Derek) to the likes of John Carradine.

They are both great movies that one can watch with interest once in a while. Yes, the special effects were a sight to behold.

It was probably the first movie I saw in a cinema if I remember right, they use to show double programs back then but " The ten commandments " was shown single because it was quite long.
