Can I manage without a car?

Dallas, Texas
August 18, 2018 2:57pm CST
I have come to Dallas as a child, with parents who neither owned a vehicle. We walked to and from school or took a bus. We walked everywhere when we were kids. Now it seems as though hardly anybody walks. I mean it is only apparent that people do in fact, drive to the park and get out and walk of course, but in general they drive cars. I have spent years paying for car repairs and what did it get me? It got me broke, that's what it did. A car is next to a house in a lifetime of expense. Even those who are pretty fortunate to afford a new car, still have to deal with traffic jams & fender benders.

I wouldn’t want to try to live without a car. It is well worth the expense to me.

It has been a pain in my butt for me mostly. Cause I hate driving.I would rather be a passenger on a bus I think. That way I can focus on reading, looking out the window. It's not like I don't like to travel sometimes, just that driving is stressful and the cost of maintaining a used car has always been a financial worry. By the time I pay for new tires, the AC goes out. If I had perhaps a new car I might change my tune.

@lookatdesktop my car isn’t even 2 years old. My husband’s SUV is 9 years old but has never given us any trouble.

I manage just fine but I have a train and the bus right outside my door to take me nearly anywhere.

Having that on the ready is basically the best alternative to having one's own vehicle, and the convenience of having it right outside your door is what makes your way of getting around the best choice alternative. In certain cities, the traffic is horrendous. I mean, even in Dallas, but I have been through such cities as Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI and so forth. They are trying to provide electric scooters in Dallas for rental and also Lime Bikes. The people in Dallas, just don't get it. They would rather drive, ONE PERSON PER CAR, on the local roads and freeways just because they feel like they can do it no other way. That is why Dallas is pretty congested and the effort to create more light rail and pedestrian walk paths along bridges and buses, to make it easy on the traffic situation, is defeating the purpose. Reason being, there are no new roads, just an effort to widen the existing freeways around the city and nothing being done to repain and properly maintain existing roads, probably due to not having enough funding for the DOT.

Where we lived before we could get by without cars. There was even a cab, of a sorts. There were friends to share rides with. Where we are now, you do nothing if you have no car. There is next to nothing in this town. No jobs either. I do not think we could make it here without at least one car.

That doesn't seem very good in many ways. Are places of interest positioned at leaste, in nearby areas that do not require a very long commute?

My family lives next to the bus station. So it is very convenient for me to go to work by bus. I don't like driving to school most of the time.

@lookatdesktop You're right. I often listen to the music on my mobile phone on my way to school.

@caopaopao , Yes, I find it relaxing and takes my mind off the things that are mundane and repetitious and adds a little pleasure to an otherwise dull ride.

My husband and I each had a car when we worked. We drove far enough away and worked such weird hours that we had to have cars.

Most people are highly dependent on cars to move from one point to the other and so many others would own a car if they could afford it

Well, looks like there is no room to drive anyway. One less car means more space between drivers and their bumpers. Moreover, less air pollution in general.

But do you want to be walking or waiting at a bus stop with packages in humid Dallas heat? Or in the rain?

Not at all. I hate that. I do not hesitate to drive under those circumstances and basically I am spoiled by having a car, an old one but a car nonetheless. So I am a hypocrite.
