Is it good to buy at ukay ukay shops?

Philippines

In the Philippines, we have a lot of ukay ukay shops. Ukay ukay means second hand things or goods being shipped from different countries. Have you bought a lot of second hand things? Are you okay with buying second hand or used things from people? Is it fine to buy Ukay ukay things?

From a legal perspective, " ukay ukay " is illegal but is somehow tolerated and I know a lot who buy. The importation of secondhand clothes is illegal. Republic Act 4653 prohibits "the commercial importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags."
Approved on June 17, 1966: An Act to safeguard the health of the people and maintain the dignity of the nation by declaring it a national policy to prohibit the commercial importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags.

@Mavic123456 I understand but that is the law, unless it is repealed, " dura lex sed lex ". As to the undignified corrupt government officials, that is a separate matter and we have laws that should be punishing them but it ssems that a lot are getting away, so sad. It only tells that politicians are good only in grandstanding by making and enacting laws but have issues implementing it.

what dignity does the Filipinos are protected from? if they themselves pocket the taxpayers' money. and also our head of the state curse at people and violates human rights. This a big ... @#$@! (I'm a Filipino by the way, that's why I ask) Is doing such acts more dignifiable than wearing used clothes?

@louievill yes, that's the problem with the law... small people like us who are "protected" are abused all the time.

I do not like to buy things from second hand shops. I prefer to buy surpluses that are much cheaper than branded clothes than buy branded ones but are already used. This is because I do not know who owned these prior, I do not think it is hygienic, and well I am not the type to scour shops and find good deals.

I am not a fan of ukay ukay items, but I guess that you can get a good item from there if you are patient enough to sift through them and check every inch of the item you are buying since most of them have defects already.

@jvincent_129 Yeah but still it needs a diligent checking of the items since it has been used so there are more possibility that damage is present there already. But of course you can still find good second hand items out there of course.

If you are diligent to find the stuff for sale then it'll be worth the hassle. Not all of them are defects, and we can find good stuff if we are lucky.

I usually buy dresses from ukay because of the length and the materials used. I got tired of checking every mall for a decent dress. I might find a dress long enough but the fabric is too thin and then there's good fabric but the length is too short. I can only find 1 dress that suits me if I get lucky. But when it comes to checking ukay shops, I can get at least 3 dresses.

I never buy second hand clothes from "ukay-ukay" not because I don't know how choose but I just don't like the idea. It is maybe OK if it was unused. I have known a friend who is fond of buying things from that shop. He had a good taste though because he's able to chose nice clothes from there.

I think other than socks and underwear, it will be okay to buy second hand clothing. I just make sure to wash really well with strong detergent and warm water to kill any dust mites or bacteria that could have accumulated as it is being passed around.

I get tempted because they are original stuffs, and cheaper. But you can't be sure if they are safe hygienically. Do you both buy clothes and shoes?
