The introvert performs

Hi My Lot, I have missed being on here more, but then, I did know that August would be busy. Lots of performing, actually. And my parent's birthdays. Dad on August 11, and mom on August 15 August 12th - Pirate Fest (like a mini Renassiance Festival) with my belly dance troupe. August 17th - Singing at Karaoke (scary as singing scares me) August 18th - Burlesque performance (it was awesome, magical really) August 18th - getting asked to play a song with one of my favorite local bands on bass I do plan to write a seperate discussion about burlesque coming soon, however all of this has made me ponder something I do like performing, generally speaking. It's less draining than trying to have a conversation with someone. THe Myers-Briggs personality test puts me in the 90something percent introvert range. (introvert and extrovert refer to how a person gets energy. Introverts make their own energy and require down time , alone time, so that they can rechange. Extroverts get energy from others. It doesn't have much to do with shyness or not shy as popularly thought.) Anyway, it holds true. Too much socializing and I'm completely wiped out. Certain individuals drain me more than others. I require alone time and don't mind being by myself. Too much by myself and I get antsy. So there is a balence there too. However performing is one of those rare times when I feel energy coming to me from other people. That's the only thing I can think of, why an introvert like me would be so drawn to this. Id be curious your thoughts and opions on personality, performing, etc.... Photo: Pixabay

I love being alone but I love being out in public with people as well. I like both so what am I? LOL, don`t say " a weirdo" cause I already know about that.

I never understood my personality. I am basically shy - yet I faced the cameras and played a very small role in a movie - years ago. I also like being alone - as well as dressing up and going out in public.

Sounds like we're similar. I don't get it either, but it seems to be how I am

I agree. Too much socializing does me in, but if I go to do an extras job or any film thing, I am doing great. Performing is like you step outside of yourself for a while.

I'm an introvert. I prefer being alone and don't socialize often. When I do, it's like I'm being recharged on another level.

@FayeHazel Yes, and those people I try to avoid, however, in my small social world, that's not easy to do.

Oh that's interesting. Do you find that some people energize you and some people drain you?

Many introverts are drawn to performing because they can become "someone else."

@FayeHazel Yes, sometimes we must dance to our own drummer so to speak... It makes company that much more of an experience.

I think that you are drawn to it because like you said it's not draining performing for people but it is to talk to them. I believe you like being around people but you don't want to have to hassle with the small talk. I am an introvert but I used to be an extrovert. I know that sounds weird but I think it may come with age?

Ah yes, that seems right. I never seem to know what to say in small talk. It's really a fine art form. I wonder too if we can change as we age

I don't mind socialising and people used to say that I was a social butterfly but the older I get the less social I am becoming. It is great that performing gives you a positive energy.

@FayeHazel yeah, I think there comes a time when we realise quality is better than quantity.

I've heard people say that too - that a person can tend to be less social the older they get. I am finding as I age that I like being around only certain people , where as I used to hang out with people - whoever would spend timewith me. Now I like quality more than quantity

Introverts are better in thinking retrospectively and come with with good ideas sometimes, that is what I have found. And I'm glad you are drawn to these occasions. Being an introvert myself, I love being out too, but not too much. After a while it gets tiring and you will like to shut everyone out and be by yourself. Extroverts I have seen grow restless on their own and always are seen going out with people because that's where they find their mojo. I have got a hyper-extrovert friend whom I have to keep at bay sometimes because she'll sometimes pop up weekly plans So yeah, I understand Being an introvert is just fine, as long as you don't attach too much importance on what other people might think of you. You can take this Myers Briggs personality test which has got 4 parameters: Introversion/Extroversion ; Intuition/Sensing ; Thinking/Feeling ; Judgement/Perception. Mine came out ISTJ type.

I love the MBTI - it's a great test. We share the first and last letters. I'm an INFJ. :-) Good luck on keeping you extrovert friend at bay.... sometimes I find the extroverts have a hard time understanding. But eventually they have "gotten" it. The one that doesn't "get it" at all in my life is my dad. He has no understanding and needs me to give him my energy all the time. I try and try to explain but he simply won't understand.

I'm not sure what my type is. I do love being around people and loved modeling in front of crowds, but I am comfortable with my own company. I'm happy you've been busy having fun things to do.

I too am an introvert but am drawn to performing. When I recite a monologue to an audience, it is the only time anyone listens to what I have to say, uninterrupted.

That's cool to meet others like me. Actually I think you have a point there too. Normally people talk over me, interrupt. I say something, no one pays attention, and 5 minutes later someone else repeats what I just said and oh wow …. what a great new idea.
