Sometimes You Just Want Fresh Popped Popcorn

My popcorn popper

I've been thinking about popcorn since the Reading Lesson I gave on Friday. As a class, we read an article titled "More Than Just a Snackfood" by Sandie Lee about the history of popcorn. Do you realize humans have been popping corn for over 5,000 years? Researchers found 1,000 year-old popcorn in Peru and it still popped. I don't know if they tasted it. Some Mezoamericans took the kernels off the cob and popped it in clay pots. Others poked a stick in the cob and popped it right on the cob and ate it like corn-on-the-cob. Popcorn was very important to the Aztecs. Besides eating popped corn, the Aztecs used for garland and headdresses in some of their most revered ceremonies. In modern times, popcorn was key in the invention of the microwave oven. I have always loved popcorn. I still remember the pot my mother would shake over the stove to make it when I was a kid. Jiffy Pop was always a hit at camp and with the Scouts with that big aluminum ball that would expand as the kernels popped. Here in our house, we've tried air popped and microwave popcorn but, a few years ago, decided we wanted more traditionally popped corn. For Christmas I received the popcorn popper pictured above. It makes the best homemade popcorn I've ever had. Do you like popcorn? If you do, how do you like to pop it? Do you like plain, buttered, cheese covered, or caramel coated?

I like it all sorts of ways..I would say plain buttered popcorn is my favorite. It is hard to beat the convenice of microwave popcorn..but you can microwave it in just a paper bag using oil and regular kernels.

The microwave is convenient. One of the things I enjoy about my popper, though, is watching the corn pop and fill the bowl as it does.

@DWDavis I was thinking of popcorn a few times. I like buttered and salt. I still make it in a pot and oil and listening to the popping of the kernels. Right now I am done eating but do want to do some drinking before I have to light candles for our fast. Enjoy your popcorn.

The popcorn was enjoyable. May I ask the reason for your fast?

@DWDavis Yes you can ask. We have three sets of holidays that come in September and October usually but this year they are in September and maybe finish in the very very beginning of October. I want to give you a little history here before I answer your question. We start out with our Jewish New Year which is our brand new year. Then the day of Atonement. That is what we just finished. What happened is our names are written down for our G-d and sealed in a book for our Day of Atonement and we fast and pray. It is decided by G-d who lives and who does not during this period. The fasting is to atone for sins. I hope that heloed you.

@DWDavis ~I always try to have some microwave popcorn on hand. Some companies also market single serving microwave popcorn. I use to eat microwave Carmel popcorn, but I haven't seen it in the stores lately.

When my sons were younger and living at home we always had microwave popcorn in the single serving size for them to have as snacks when they got home from school or ball practice.

I love popcorn. I like mine plain with just salt. No butter or cheese if you please. Growing up my daddy ate popcorn every day. We had an air popper and it got lots of use.

Have you ever entered a cinema theater without popcorn.? (lol) We have a simple method to make our own popcorn. We get special corn that is meant for popping it.

A little salt and quite a bit of garlic powder does us well or even a little nutritional yeast.

We have a simple air popper that requires no oils. We stopped having those microwaved popcorn baggies a long time ago - it's filled with chemicals and such - a friend even said his daily headaches stopped because he stopped he eating them. We enjoy ours plain - but on occasion we will melt some butter for it!

I do and I have two corn poppers. I don't like the microwave type though.
