A Two Week Gig

My substituting position is going to last for two weeks. The lady I am covering for had surgery this summer. Then she developed pneumonia in both lungs. The doctor says she can come back September 4. That cuts down on my computer earning a bit, but it is not a hard job, and I like keeping my brain alive in other ways. So I am going to sixth grade for an hour, spending an hour in 10th grade English, and hour in Geometry, and hour in Biology, and three hours in the resource room. I tried to put up a post from my phone, but have forgotten how to get it to post, so you got nothing from me until now. I should look and see what you have posted.

You earn less on myLot, but surely more substituting your colleague.

Substituting freshens my brain. I am seeing new things and not such a boring person.

I do earn more, if life is just about money.

You're going to have full days for awhile anyway. That's good, right?

I miss being at home and lazy, but it is stimulating to see new faces and talk about new ideas.

@peavey I think about the bills I can pay or what I can buy for the house. I may do well when I have my choice of duty various places.

I assume she already has the lesson plans laid out for you, and you just have to follow them?

Since I am a paraprofessional, I do not teach new material. The actual classroom instructors do the teaching, I support as needed. For instance the sixth grader and I partner read a story and worked on a reader's guide worksheet. That way I could make sure he knew what unfamiliar words meant, and he got the words right when he read them. The sophomore just mainly needs to be kept on task and guided away from distractions. In the resource room we can work on homework or this early in the year just spend time getting acquainted and setting goals.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I think I would like shorter times at the different schools. I think I may be getting bored. I absolutely hate packing my lunch, and the resource room teacher likes to know what I have brought. He is a foody.

@GardenGerty I know you told me this before but I have forgotten. That seems like it would be a rewarding job, but one that would probably frustrate me personally.

Do you like bouncing around between subjects and ages? I'd get confused!

Well, the middle school kid is first hour. After that it is High School the rest of the day. It is a small school so the sophomore class of twenty is beginning to be very familiar to me.

@TheHorse I sometimes feel like I am not working hard enough. Had a good time with the sixth grader today. As usual, many kids on the caseload have problems in their families.School becomes a safe place for them, whether they admit it or not.

Subbing will certainly pay a lot more than myLotting. Good subs are hard to find, and I know you will be awesome! See you when you recuperate. lol

Yes, I had a little talk with my para support person and agreed to go all over the county. If they flatter me enough I can be persuaded.

Hope you get a good pay from that short contract. Re: using phone for posting, I am still struggling.

It pays well enough, but not as well as if I had taken a contract for full time this year. It also lets me see and learn new things, and meet new people.

@GardenGerty I am doing something similar, doing short term contracts for various places. Less money, but the bosses agree to let me be on flexible terms. The advantage is, I learn a lot more (I am curious of how different companies run. If I have to be in a nursing home soon, I would rather to gather a lot of memories right now for the future .)

Actually it is not that tough, I just do not get to sleep in, wear sloppy clothes and stay on the computer all day. I am regarding it as an Alzheimer's prevention program.

I would get in trouble if I ran in the halls. The principal would make me go back and start over. So I walked with a purpose and enjoyed the classes, pretty much.

It is good. I was not wanting to work full time this year. If I could afford it I would not work at all, but this gives my brain some new cells.
