Is there more than one way to skin a cat?

Did you ever hear someone say that? Do you ever think that when you see a cat? Did they actually skin cats at one time?
When I want to say that there is more than one way to do something, I think that I will say that there is more than one way to peel a banana? Does this makes more sense for our day?

Yes I remember hearing and actually saying that many years ago. I sure hope it was never a thing.

I cringe thinking I'd skin a cat! Especially when the cat is named Felix!

I never did like that saying and I think it would be nicer to say "there is more than one way to peel a banana" as you suggest @1hopefulman. .

If I was running the world, there would be no hurting of any animals and everyone would be a vegetarian and we would run competitions on who could come up with new ways of peeling a banana!

Thanks! I wonder how and where the expression about skinning cats originated?

@DianneN I just did and the origin is quite gruesome and so I'll leave it where it is.

I agree! What do you think should replace it?

@1hopefulman its hard to replace idioms. Maybe just stick to the direct meaning.

Yes, there are different ways of doing something but I would never want to hurt a cat.

The banana is designed to be peeled. So let's skin bananas at least once a day.

@1hopefulman
Everytime I look at my cat I do not think about skinning her or other ways to peel a banana.

I've never heard of any of this.
Leave the cats alone, people.
But eat as many bananas as you want. (Wait, not too many. Excessive potassium can throw you into an arrhythmia.) Okay I'm done with the medical talk and I'm outta here.

Hi Melanie! It is a very old expression. I have heard it used many times. I couldn't even put a worm on a fishing hook, so no I would never do it. I like bananas and did you know that there more than one way to skin one?
Here is a little reference on the cat expression .

@1hopefulman I also love to skin bananas. I have now the three kittens of my neighbors that come every early morning to ask for breakfast. They are about 6 weeks old and so cute.

I like to use the banana expression that I made up as I would never want to hurt a cat.

One can start from the top or from the bottom. One can cut the banana in two and then peel it as they like.

A comment above mentioned that they skin cats and dogs in China. It's definitely something that I would never do. However, I do like to skin (peel) bananas.

It's an old exression and I have heard it used many times to show that there are many ways to do something. I found this reference.
