Yay! I remembered

I remembered what I had meant to write about. You know, in my other post I mentioned that I had an idea when I went to bed, then I forgot overnight. During Geometry class which was right after lunch the teacher had to go over the fire drill protocol. . . and the tornado drill protocol. Then she was supposed to talk about an intruder drill. So she did. When I got home, I was thinking about that particular protocol. It involves turning tables up against the classroom door. That is supposed to slow and intruder down. Wait a minute!! All the doors swing outward!! How will doors up against the doors slow down an intruder? Doors that open out into the hall are a good idea, in case of fires, or if evacuating for any reason. However, they are hard to secure if someone is trying to get into a class room. The other step in that drill is to break out a window, evacuate the students and lastly the teacher. To me it makes more sense to lock the doors, put tables across, crouch behind them and shelter in place. That is how we have drilled at other schools. The final conclusion by the teacher was "This is Centre School District in rural Kansas" we have to talk about this but we will not ever need it. Do you have home escape plans in case of disasters? I am not expecting an intruder, myself. On the other hand, if I am working in the back of the house, I shut and lock my front doors.

Not really. I keep my .22 unloaded in the closet and my baseball (softball, actually) bat in the back of my truck. If this place catches fire, I have one door and a balcony with a redwood tree I could use to get down. If I fall through my floor in an earthquake, I think my (male) downstairs neighbor would be OK with my lack of clothing.

You know, we do not drill for quakes here, but with the amount of fracking in Oklahoma we are having more of them here. Right now I have three accessible doors to exit, no place to go in a tornado except an interior hall way.

@GardenGerty I've heard bathtubs are good. Do you have one?

@TheHorse Both of my bathtubs have windows over them, so not safe. I would shut the bathroom door, and the two bedroom doors and hunker down in the hall way. I would choose east or west end of the house depending on where the tornado was coming from.

No, no escape plans here. My rooms are concrete and no natural disasters except an occasional flood during monsoon season. As far a theft, I keep my doors locked only when I leave. Been in the same apartment for over ten years and not once has there been a theft to my knowledge in all of the 16 units!

That sounds very good. I know that there is a big movement to build more with concrete.

The doors open outward? I guess that's why they suggest piling up the desks in front of it. Won't keep the door closed, but will be an obstacle to entry, nonetheless. Remember "duck and cover"?

I have seen videos of duck and cover but I never had drills in it. These are tables, about five feet long. If turned long wise against the door, so the narrow part was in the doorway they would fall on an intruder, that might be effective for a minute or so. If some were also turned across they might recover from being smashed and trip over the other ones.

Oh yeah! I live in the woods, I have weapons everywhere. Most all times the doors are locked. Tornado`s? No I would just die.

Do you not have tornados?
