Free vouchers and a tree made of chain

I haven’t been on myLot for a few days and I know I have dozens of notifications to catch up on. We’re now in a paddock near Merredin in West Australia’s wheatbelt region. Soon we’ll be off taking photos of horses and riders competing in an endurance ride. We’ve spent a few days in the company of very good friends touring through some wildflower areas. Last night we spent in Beacon, a small town with a very clean and neat caravan park. The tariff was quite reasonable but as part of the deal we were given vouchers for free drinks at their country club and a voucher each for $10. This could be spent in any one of about 20 different businesses in Beacon or its nearby neighbour, Bencubbin. We thought giving out vouchers was a lovely idea. Of course, it works both ways. We spent extra money in the town as we used our vouchers to help purchase a really nice meal in the country club. The local people were all really friendly too and we had a very social night swapping yarns and tales of who we were and where we lived, etc. I loved this ‘tree’ in the main street. It is a weeping willow made of light chain. The chains sway a little in any breeze. The birds are magpies but not real ones.

I remember to have seen a forest of trees made with plastic in a museum exhibition. I do not remember who was the artist, but this metal tree has a similar look. Quite too good for a street.

@JudyEv It is also educational, many people have never visited a museum of contemporary art.

@topffer That's very true and many people find the sculptures quite fascinating and even enjoyable.

More and more towns are erecting artworks of some sort in their streets and parks. It's all about drawing in the tourists.

@JudyEv It surely looks real when it moves with the breeze.

Judy, I will have to say, based on all the photos you post of the life-size art, sculptures and other crazy things you come across in your travels, Australia is a very weird place. Interesting, but weird. I can't wait to visit someday and travel around enjoying all that weirdness! haha

@JudyEv Okay, then let's say Australia is very unique, instead of weird!

@moffittjc Oh, much better to be unique rather than weird.

I don't really think 'weird' is quite the right word but maybe I'm just more used to the weirdness.

I really liked the fact that the chains swayed gently in any breeze. Much more life-like than a static model.

Oh dear, not a real weeping willow and magpie? just a wannabe? (Just teasing, it looks quite artistic and guess, last forever, tidy & reliable too with respect to the real one )

There wouldn't be enough water in that area to keep a real weeping willow happy but there are a great many real magpies.

@YrNemo Yes, it was a pretty barren place but there are huge wheat bins nearby so the galahs and parrots have plenty of food.

@JudyEv Look too baren there for any birds to find anything to munch on... (Hope the people there drop lots of fries or bread crumbs around.)

Those chains must be waterproof and green in colour too?

No, they are not waterproof and are a rusty brown colour. They would have been rust-coloured when they were first put up.

How is the weather in Australia now ? I guess it is really hot. There are many special animals unique to Australia, did you see a kangaru, a platypus, a koala... ? The tree of chains looks nice, it reminds me the Avatar movie, there were trees there with long branches that went down almost like that. One final question, what is a tariff ?

@JudyEv Thank you very much for your respond, I like this joey, it is so cute :-) Long feet and a thick tail, I hope he doesn't make any problems. I send you some sun from Israel, to get some summer heat.

The tariff is the fee charged for staying at the caravan park. We are just moving into spring and the last few days have been sunny and a bit warmer. Our nights are still quite cold. Not all of Australia gets really hot. Our days over the last week have been between 16 and 19C. Hopefully they'll get a bit warmer from now on. We have lots of kangaroos on our 18 acre farm. We don't have koala or platypus in Western Australia but I have seen them from time to time when we've been on holiday. Here is a photo taken out our lounge window. It is a joey (young kangaroo).

They have. I found another one today on the way home - a tribute to the working draught horses that were so essential to the early agriculturalists. I'll write about it another time.

Curious art pieces. I wonder when they were made? And if the chains represent any social commentary?

I couldn't find out when they were made and I don't think there is any particular meaning to any of it.
