An Early Summer Day at Hammonasett State Park

Located in Madison Connecticut, Hammonasett is a beach that I have been visiting since I was a small child. It was a summer day's out, usually a Sunday. We would go to church and then load up our cooler, towels, jugs of drink, pails and shovels and drive the 30 or so miles to Long Island Sound. It was very exciting for us as children.
This picture was taken by me about 8 or 9 years ago which was the last time I spent a day at the beach in Connecticut. It was a family day with my mom, my daughter and sons and their kids. We arrived early so that we could commandeer several picnic tables and while it was too cool to swim, it was a wonderful day to enjoy playing frisbie, earing good food and enjoy the sunshine.
It was one of the last outings we took with my mom before she went into the nursing home.

Before I read the final line of this post, I had a feeling that when you mentioned your Mom, that it was about recalling a very sentimental trip to the beach, and perhaps your last with her. And sure enough, when I read the last line I got goose bumps.

It is a bittersweet memory but she was still very much herself on the day and we all had a good time.

@BelleStarr You're lucky that you have that memory.
My Dad was so sick those last couple of years, and I feel terrible that I do not have a regular Dad (pre-sick Dad) memory of a normal visit with him. And I still cannot recall his pre-sick voice. His sick voice, and visits with him from that time period, I have plenty of, but just bits of the other visits. And I wish that I had more. Treasure yours for that reason, okay?

Yes it is. I took lots of pictures that day. I also have pictures in my mother's photo albums of all of us getting sunburnt at the beach. lol

Thank you, yes it is a nice place, I think I will take a ride down there this fall when all the summer people have left. Just to reminisce.

@BelleStarr I experienced this when I visited my bf's family in Lithuania. We just went to lake and put out something to grill and so on.. it was fun.

lol We do pretty much avoid the beach, I think though we should go down when the season is over or I am thinking about heading up to the cape for a few days this fall.

@BelleStarr We went last summer with our son and grandson. It was so mobbed and it took us 2 hours waiting in line to buy lunch! Off season is much better to go there - or to the Cape. lol

My husband has never been much of a beach person, we did go with the kids when they were young but these days I really do avoid the sun,

@BelleStarr the beach was part of my childhood too, with them being all around. But we all preferred the pond, as none of us liked saltwater or crowds.
