If coffee is a stimulant and addictive, is it a drug?

I have friends that cannot function without a cup of coffee or two to start their day. Can you make it through a whole day without coffee? Since for many, coffee is a stimulant and addictive, is coffee a drug? I am personally allergic to coffee. It gives me the runs, a stomachache and severe heartburn. I used to enjoy drinking about 4 cups of coffee a day. I have not been able to drink coffee for decades. The only thing I can tolerate and enjoy about coffee is the smell. How do you feel about coffee?

I like to have my coffee with my breakfast and I miss the coffee if I have not, but I can live without it. Do you know that this is the same for people addicted to "tea"? It's not the coffee that is addictive is the "caffeine" and it is contained in coffee, tea, chocolate and sodas.

Have you ever gone a week without coffee? I don't drink or eat any of the things that you mention. Do you know anyone that drinks decaf coffee?

@1hopefulman Decaffeinated coffee is garbage, they use chemicals to remove caffeine and those chemicals are far more dangerous than the caffeine. I do not know if I even went one week without coffee, I think not because I hate the taste of tea, I am intolerant to milk and I like something hot in the morning with my breakfast.

Yes but the levels of caffeine in coffee are much higher than in other beverages.

I can go for a day without coffee if I absolutely had to. Otherwise it's what starts my day and I love it

@Marilynda1225 A cup a day, I would just enjoy it. We eat every day, but that's not an addiction. So enjoy!

A cup of coffee in the morning to start the day makes a big difference. I like to enjoy it before going to work and before having any human contact!

@1hopefulman Mostly, I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning. Because of the heat where I live, I usually don't drink more. Only sometimes, I repeat another cup of coffee in the afternoon.

I know about the smell - I even wrote about it once. Especially when it is being brewed in a percolator - one sniff can satisfy me. Yes, it does cause digestive problems, that is the reason why even though I like coffee - with milk and sweetener - I have one cup maybe three times a week.

I love the smell of coffee. I love the 3 in 1s too, just because it has the right amount of cream and sugar for me :-) It's convenient too, because all you have to have is hot water mix and enjoy :-) Nothing can beat the smell of real strong coffee though :-) That will help me wake up and I think this is when coffee is termed as a stimulant :-) I wonder if there could be a plug in that can be used in the office so nobody has to bother with drinking coffee which makes bones brittle.

So, drinking coffee can be harmful to one's health?

@proseprity68 Yes, the health field is quite confusing but it is wise to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, get enough sleep and live an active life. I went for an hour of cycling this afternoon.

@1hopefulman Things are quite confusing. Medically they say that coffee is good and there are articles that says that drinking coffee is bad. I would like to agree that drinking too much coffee and not having calcium supplement or drinking milk will cause the bones to be brittle. I agree too with the article that coffee is good for the brain or the way the brain gets stimulated. The person becomes more focused with what they are doing.

I have found out it is possible to get used to be without coffee. I once tested to use cicoria and Bambu coffee which is no coffee but has herbs that remind of the taste of coffee. One can use coffee whith these herbs and take less and less real coffee and more herbs until one doesn’t need the real coffee or a tiny amount of it - both cicoria and Bambu is available at health stores..

@1hopefulman Yes, during Ww2 many used cicoria - it was sometimes impossibl to get real coffee.. Why not check if the health stores in your place sell it?

I love coffee and drink it everyday. Well, except when I got sick, my doctor and my mom said no coffee till I finish the medicine. I guess it's normal if you cant drink coffee. Some people get weak stomach. My mom cant drink coffee either. Every time she drank coffee, she cant sleep, got nausea and get really bad headache.

Yes, some of us are allergic to something in the coffee and must avoid it, even though we might like to drink some. But I am concerned about people that can't make it through the day without coffee.

I drink coffee occasionally.Potato chips are my stimulant lol! I kinda weird when we develop allergic reactions to certain food. I used to take ibuprofen when I have fever but I had allergic reactions to it recently-last May and just a couple of weeks ago.

@gofsey It's funny how at times things seem so important and at other times they become insignificant. At one time coffee was an important part of my life and now it means nothing. A glass of water is just as enjoyable and a lot more healthier.
