Twas midnight on the ocean---who knows this poem?

This poem and variants are over 100 years old -------Twas midnight on the ocean, not a streetcar was in sight, and a barefoot boy with shoes on sat standing in the light. As the organ peeled potatoes,as the choir rendered lard,as the sexton rang a dishrag, someone set the church on fire! "Holy smoke!" the preacher shouted, and in his flight he lost his hair. Now his head resembles heaven, for there is no parting there.

I don't know this as English is not my native language but I know a similar German one.

@Aquitaine24 I'm sure that it is not a variation but an original German poem. Each language has such nonsense poems children love.
