Twas midnight on the ocean---who knows this poem?

This poem and variants are over 100 years old -------Twas midnight on the ocean,not a streetcar was in sight,and a barefoot boy with shoes on sat standing in the light.As the organ peeled potatoes,as the choir rendered lard,as the sexton rang a dishrag,someone set the church on fire! "Holy smoke!" the preacher shouted,and in his flight he lost his hair.Now his head resembles heaven,for there is no parting there.

@Aquitaine24 I'm sure that it is not a variation but an original German poem. Each language has such nonsense poems children love.
