Love me, love my horse

We have attended quite a few (horse) endurance rides over the last few years. Our nephew rode in a few and for a while we volunteered for various jobs. When the lady who regularly took photos retired, Vince was quick to offer to fill her place. So for the last few years we’ve been going along and taking photos.
Many people are frightened of horses and I can understand that. They are big and strong and not all of them are gentle. One of the gentle ones was at the last ride we attended and in the charge of an 11-year-old girl. Or perhaps he was in charge of her. You can see she obviously loves her mount. She and her father completed a 63 kilometre ride (39 miles). Later she was awarded a prize for ‘Best Managed Horse’ in her division.
The crop behind the pair is canola (rape). Although we’ve had a lot of rain, the day of the ride was bright and sunny and Vince was able to get some great photos of horses travelling along the edge of the crop.

@JudyEv and of course if you like to have a healthier horse you should put her in grassy land, don't you?

@Mavic123456 Yes, they can eat a lot and if you have to buy all their food it can be expensive. Also they like to be able to roam around a bit and stretch their legs.

He could dump her or run off or anything in an instant but he doesn't. Neither do any of the others of course - well, not many of them. They are such noble animals.

I like horses. I have only ridden a few times though. One of the rides I was on, was a trail ride in the mountains..that had my heart in my throat the whole time because the horse was walking along the very edge of the trail..which I guess is what they do..but I kept thinking one slip, and over the edge we will go..fortunately, it never happened..

@vandana7 No, they shouldn't be left in the care of a horse. It isn't fair to either the horse or the child. The father was just behind the girl in the photo and in my case, I was going for a ride with my father and sister. Too much can go wrong too quickly I think if there isn't at least some adult supervision.

I'm not a horse person myself. My daughter loved horses, and wanted one but I couldn't afford it. I let her go for riding lessons, which she loved. She's in her forties now and would still love to have horses, but she and her hubby can't really afford them either, plus they wouldn't have enough time to care for them properly. I love this pic! I think horses are gorgeous animals, I just never really liked my animals bigger than me, lol. Intimidated, I guess.

I can understand that they are intimidating, especially if you're not used to being around them. If you've grown up with them, then it is totally different. I'm always wary of camels and alpacas but those that work with them have no fear whatsoever. We always had horses on the farm then when we married the horse(s) went by the wayside for a few decades but eventually we were able to get back into them.

Girls seem to love horses more than boys.

It's nice, isn't it? And she's not really very big for such a big horse but the little ones are sometimes trickier than the big ones.

@kobesbuddy That's true but they make great endurance mounts. Some are not up to carrying a heavy rider so there might be part-breds among the heavyweight division.
