If someone asked you to witness their signature on a form, would you say "Sure" or would you hem and haw and wonder about what you're getting into? I asked 3 (or 5, two were pairs) people to perform this nicety for me this morning, and they wouldn't, afraid they'd be signing their life away. Sheesh! I ended up having to make an appointment with my health care provider to do it. The receptionist was afraid to do it, so popped in to ask the nurse practitioner about it. That's why I have a medical appointment tomorrow. I had wanted to get it in the mail today, before the long weekend.

Are you presenting other identification documents evidencing your signatures like driving license, insurance card, etc., which have your signature and picture on them? I would based on such evidences. Otherwise, I would hesitate.

@BarBaraPrz That is rather strange. Was Donald Trump standing right behind you? That would explain why they behaved that way.

Some legal documents require three witnesses to your signing, I have asked strangers and they did it.

Witnessing a signature is nothing more nor less than just that. All that you are doing is saying "I watched this person sign this document with his/her own hand". It doesn't involve you in any way in the content of the document and, very often, it may not be appropriate for the witness to know what the document is about: all that is needed is an affirmation that the person signing the document did so with their own hand. That is why you really shouldn't sign something and then look for someone to 'witness' the signature!

You and I know that. Why don't other people?

@BarBaraPrz A lot of people get scared about signing their name to something. I have witnessed signatures many times on documents in which I had no interest and whose contents I had no right or business to know anything about (people's wills, for example). I suppose that, technically, if there had been anything fishy going on and it came to court, I could be called as a witness to give evidence that I really did see the person sign their name. I might even be asked whether the person signed of their own free will and that they were mentally capable of signing but I certainly wouldn't be legally obliged to answer that and, if I did, it would be strictly my own opinion of the matter.

Fair enough, but the form would clearly state "Witness signature".

With your new orange look, I understand why they are suspicious. Seriously I would do that for you if I was living not far.

People are weird nowadays. All they need to do is see your ID and watch while you sign. Its simple.
