Neighbor's dog won't shut up

Hello MyLot, I thought I would get your opinions of a certain situation going on here. -- My apartment window faces a couple of houses, one of which has 2 dogs. Now the dogs bark-all-day-and-night-long almost without stopping. I hate the air conditioner and I would rather leave my windows open. But at the same time I don't want to listen to an almost un-ending chorus of bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-HOWL-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark-bark... So they have a little, yappy dog that yip barks, which occasionally gets the larger dog going with it's "hunting dog howl". So yeah, it's a real fun little "concert" they put on here. If the dogs only barked once in awhile and then were quiet I wouldn't complain since I know that they're bound to bark here and there. But all day long it's tiresome. When the man comes home, he doesn't even stop them. Let's 'em keep yapping. When the woman comes home, she will stop them occasionally. Other neighbors have complained to them to which I guess only starts an argument. Other neighbors have called the cops to which the man of the house says he will just bribe the cops with free donuts - literally , as the man works at a local convenience store that has a bakery My idea is to leave a short note - explaining that I don't mean to offend them but that their dogs do tend to bark all day when they (the people) aren't home, and to give them a printed page from a website with ideas on how to address excessive barking in dogs. Normally I like dogs, and respect responsible dog owners , but having dogs shouldn't be a license to torture your neighbors, either.... I understand it may take them time to incorporate different methods to keep the dog's more quiet -- but after that I see no other method than to call the cops. What do you think My Lot? Am I within my rights? Photo:Pixabay Article on how to keep dogs more quiet :

You could find an app for your smart phone that emits a piercing tone at a frequency the dogs can hear that people can't, one that will annoy them without hurting them, and play it in their direction anytime they bark. As they come to associate the annoying noise with their barking, they will stop barking. Don't let on to anyone, especially the owners, what you're doing. It won't harm the dogs.

That's a good idea. They will associate yapping with discomfort.... I know there used to be whistles you could get..... hmmmmmm

I had an idea. Maybe you and the neighbors could give the people with the dogs a DVD of a video for dogs that keeps them entertained while the owners are away. Just a thought.

Not a bad idea since one of the reasons for excessive barking that I read about is "excessive boredom"

@FayeHazel A video might make them shut up for a while. There are videos that last for hours with stuff dogs like to watch.

@FayeHazel Sorry about the situation. I was out on our porch reading on our Saturday because it is our Sabbath which is our day of rest. The building next door this guy brings his dogs with him and they were barking away. People would stop and stare and kids would watch them and copy them. I have heard them once before. Back to your situation. Has anyone talked to the owner of the dogs and asked why they bark? Small dogs bark and too bad the small one got the bigger one to bark too. It is not fair to you because it is very noisy. People have tried everything and do not know what to tell you.

I hope the guy with the dogs in your area doesn't become an issue with excessive barking. Wouldn't be very restful. :/ Apparently some of my neighbors have talked to them - and it hasn't gone too well. Which is why I wonder if leaving a note or letter with some tips on how to quiet a dog would go over better? Maybe not.

@FayeHazel Notes probably will not help. If he has ignored a direct confrontation from neighbors he probably will not heed to a note. That being said, it is worth a try if constructed in a pleasant "do me a favor sort of way."

The eerie howling of our neighbor's dog at night is very disturbing. However it doesn't happen every night.

I thin you are within your rights. Most local ordinances have something about keeping the peace. Barking dogs would certainly infringe on that.

I can see now that Luna is a very well groomed girl. She only barks when people she doesn´t like pass very near my fence. Maybe you should give the owners of the dogs the advise you found online.

That is my plan - the next time the dogs start in. It's interesting. After pretty much a whole season of the nonstop yapping.... after I wrote this post - the dogs are quiet - it's been for a whole day now. WOw. Could this be the power of positive thinking? Lol? Or it's probably something like they are out of town and took the dogs with them

No one should have to endure barking dogs. My brother makes a bark collar that many stores sell. I think you can suggest that in your nice note.

Ah yes, good plan - I have a friend with what I call a yappy dog.... but she has a bark collar for her - the dog is allowed to bark a couple of times and it gets a warning buzz, if it keeps it up, it gets a jolt. Responsible solution in my opinion

I would say yes, you are. We have a noise law here. A barking dog after 9 p.m. would be subject to a fine. Well, the owner of said dog would be subject to the fine.

I dont really think they're that responsible of owners if they dont shut them up from all the barking.. and how does it not make them mad themselves. Like do they use ear plugs whe they go home or what

Barking dogs are out of control day and night and nobody does a thing. The masses love them so much authorities will do nothing and you are met with hatred if revealing you object to them in any way. Dog are taking over and people are allowing them.

I many ways I think you are right. While I do respect the responsible pet owner -- there are plenty of ones out there who are not responsible. And, like you say - so many people are dog fans that if you even suggest that some dog related behavior annoys you - you are the one that is critisized. I hope I do not offend anyone, but I have often said that dogs, and little kids - are a license to abuse other people.....

You know, that is actually maligning the cops to suggest they will avoid their duty for donuts. If you leave them a note, keep a copy. It may be that you will have to complain to the police.I think they have to pay attention if a formal complaint is filed.

I know. I thought that was really low, too. Apparently though that's what dog-man said when a neighbor of mine told him to keep the dog's more quiet or else they would call the cops. I know he does work at the local convenience store too

I hope that even if he does try to bribe the police that the police do not take the bribe. My neighbors had a dog that barked all night long when it was left outside which it always was. I called the cops after about 6 months of not sleeping a night because of it. They did get the dog to stop barking somehow after that. I assume they brought it inside. If a dog is barking like that it is upset. If they aren't going to take care of it they should find it a new home! I feel really bad for this dog and for you having to deal with the noise of it. I would call the police. The more neighbors that report the issue maybe then something will be done.

I know I would think that was way lame if I were a cop. I agree it is easy to be upset at the dog, but in reality it is the owner that needs to make sure that the dog is cared for in such a way that it didn't need to bark all day

Ugh! I would hate that. You could try the DW Davis solution and see if it works, if not..I would leave a note..and if that doesn't work you will have to call either the police or get your resident office involved. If your rental office is involved it may carry more weight than an individual call from you.
