The Pope

No one knew his name or his story. He just appeared one day and climbed up a metal gridwork that was the support for a building never erected. He stood on a platform at the top and started speaking. After a few words that did not make sense, he put out his arms toward the crowd and said, "Bless you, my children." Then he climbed down and quickly went away, talking to no one. We just called him the Pope. One day, he did not show up and we never saw him again. I wish the Pope well no matter where he is. Did you have odd characters in your town? Do you ever think about them?

Hope he did not get arrested or on rehab. A lot of people ( but not all) who do odd things are high on banned and illegal substances, others might be suffering from some mental or psychological disorder and some are natural attention seekers.

@TheHorse This guy was in New York state. He never annoyed anyone that I know of. Just climbed and preached and went away. Thanks for giving comfort to the guy in the doorway.

@akalinus We surely have colorful people living in the village, but no one comes to my mind.

@LadyDuck I am sure they are there if you look for them. People tend to notice the noisy or aggressive ones first. There was another one but I think I did a post about her some time back.

Most places have one or more so that is unusual.

Many cities and towns have people like that. Go to Hyde Park Corner in London on a Sunday morning and you can see loads of them preaching and blessing people.

I never saw anything like that before or since. I thought it was unusual. He was there every day for a while.

I'd imagine London attracts may "oddballs," as do the larger cities here in the US.

@TheHorse Things in Great Britain are different. They have traditions there going back to times before the USA were even thought of. More on Speakers Corner in Hyde Park, London, here:
Speakers' Corner is a traditional site for public speeches and debates since the mid 1800's when protests and demonstrations took place in Hyde Park.

In Berkeley, near the preschool, there is some kind of "half way house," or whatever they're called. There are a bunch of characters there. But no Pope.

@akalinus Yeppers, we got him some water and some paper towel for the blood. He was actually thankful. Though his words were slurred, I heard him say, "I appreciate your presence here." But by the time I got back from getting my coffee, he was gone.

I am sure everyone has some peculiar characters in their towns. I too have. But I see them, talk about them and then forget them.

Maybe you never met one that was worth remembering.
