Approximately 15 years ago, my husband and I moved into a Southern California retirement community called Laguna Woods Village. We feel so fortunate to have found this place. Our retirement community is pretty incredible ... two golf courses, five pools, tennis courts, an equestrian center with horses owned by the community, riding trails and arenas, seven clubhouses, including one for the largest bridge club in California, a performing arts center, a ball room, hundreds of classes we can take, and constant parties and special events. The above photo of our main golf course was taken from the patio of the private community restaurant ... a lovely place to have dinner or a cocktail. There is a creek, surrounded by a private park, which meanders through part of the community. It is a great place to walk. I have often posted photos of egrets and ducks I have taken while walking along the creek. We can also walk around the perimeter of the smaller, "executive" golf course, as well as anywhere else we want to walk in the community. It is legal to drive golf carts on our streets and to the nearby restaurants, shops and businesses outside the community. This is wonderful for people who no longer drive a regular car. Our closest Starbucks often has a row of decorated golf carts parked outside. There are flowers everyone, all year long. It is beautifully landscaped. Our community also has a free wheelchair accessible bus system which will pick you up and take you to any home, clubhouse or local business. We are surrounded by dozens of business which specialize in catering to an aging population. For example, there are places which will deliver restaurant meals to your door. We are also surrounded by churches, synagogues and temples. We have a lot of of religious diversity in our community. All that, and we are on the edge of the charming artsy beach community of Laguna Beach and only four miles from the ocean. For those who no longer drive, they can take the local bus to the beach for less than $1 each way. To be fair, the one downside is that the homes and condos were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Most of them have been modernized and upgraded over the years, with granite counter tops, walk-in showers, hardwood floors, skylights and various other upgrades. However, they are still a little old-fashioned. The upside of the older housing is that this is one of the more affordable communities in Orange County, California. (Not cheap, but far less than the multi-million dollar homes in Laguna Beach.) Anyway, with so much to do here, people do not spend a lot of time sitting around in their condos! If you want to learn more about our community, here is a link to the official website, and below that is a YouTube video about our community: https://lagunawoodsvillage.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vra8D-TFuyE I would love to hear what everyone loves about the community where they live, too!

Affordable - that is a big plus living in Southern CA if that is at all possible! Yah, when I hear Laguna Beach, I automatically think of those super nice homes. It sounds like a wonderful community with lots of great amenities . My mother in law may be moved to an independent senior living situation in Irvine in the near future . . . but I wonder if a retirement community would be better.

@much2say - If she is considering independent living in Irvine, which almost borders Laguna Woods, she might meet with a Realtor and investigate Laguna Woods Village. There is so much more to do here than at any of the independent living communities. There are rentals as well as condos to purchase, and the rentals are much cheaper than most independent living senior homes. However, we do not have a nursing or heathcare aide staff in Laguna Woods Village, it is solely independent living. If someone needs that, then an independent senior living situation might be necessary. If someone moves into the part of Laguna Woods Village known as the Towers, the rent or dues are higher than other parts of the community, but they include your utilities and maid service, as well as dinner and lunch every day, served in the downstairs restaurants, with a generous menu. That very well might work for her and is likely to be less expensive than any of the independent living senior homes I know about!

@DeborahDiane Thank you so much for this information! Hubby is going to forward the name to sister in law (she calls the shots). Those independent living places cost A LOT - and reading the reviews, you really don't get the best bang for your buck. MIL may one day soon need a driver to take her places, but other than that she is still doing relatively well. At the same time, I know she is on a very limited budget and I don't know what all is entailed . . . sister in law takes care of her finances and seems to think the independent living senior home is still doable . . . I just don't know that she will be happy there.

@much2say - I understand. It can be hard for families to decide what is right when their family members age. I am sure your sister-in-law will make the decision she thinks is best.

@LadyDuck - Yes, the affordability of the homes is a real plus. We feel very fortunate to have found this community. Our 40 year-old daughter jokes that she can't wait to be 55, because then she will be old enough to live here, too!

@changjiangzhibin89 - Yes, we are very fortunate to live here. I think the people who grow old here live longer than people in other parts of the US.

@changjiangzhibin89 - I agree that living in this community does lead to longevity. We have people who still go to the gym, even though they are over 100 years old! They need a little help with the equipment, but I think that is impressive.

I looked at the link you left on my post. It is a lovely community. I wish you much more happiness there. Does it have a hair salon?

@DianneN - Not inside the gated, residential part of the community, but we are surrounded by a large number of businesses, which include hair salons, nail salons, spas, restaurants, luxury hotels and similar facilities. After all, this is Orange County, California, with Laguna Beach and Newport Beach just a short drive away! We really enjoy it here!

@DianneN - Some communities have hair salons inside the walls of the gates communities, but our business district is outside the walls of our community. Everything is very convenient, though, and we have a free bus service which will take people who don't drive anywhere within the village or to the nearby shopping and business areas. We have 18,000 residents and most people who move here never move out, unless they become so ill they can no longer live independently. Even when that happens, we have several assisted living communities just outside the walls, so it is easy to visit my friends who have had to move to assisted living. One of the assisted living communities has cocktail parties every Monday evening, to encourage people who live nearby to go visit their friends. I think I could live here the rest of my life, unless something changes dramatically!

@DeborahDiane It sounds awesome! The reason I asked about hair salons is that two couples we know in Florida have a hair salon as well as just about everything else. But no ocean view.

You have a wonderful community. I live in a regular apartment complex. Nothing fancy about it, and it doesn't allow pets. However, the staff is wonderful. I have a two-bedroom unit for a great price, well below what the normal cost is here. It's sectioned for low-income housing. All the units are two-bedroom.

@just4him - I'm so glad the staff is wonderful. That can make all the difference in whether or not you like your community. Having a two-bedroom at an affordable price is fabulous. I know you mentioned several times in the past how happy your are with the place you are now living. It is convenient, you can go swimming and you feel safe and well-cared for.

That sounds a really lovely place to live. I wouldn't mind finding something similar for when we have to leave here.

@JudyEv - I understand completely. We gave a lot of our stuff to our adult children, and we still have way too much. We have an enclosed patio with boxes stacked in one corner, and I just don't want to go through them! It feels like I have been downsizing for a decade, and I don't want to get rid of any more of the things I have now.

@JudyEv - I remember you mentioned to me once before that you and Vince were interested in finding a retirement community. I hope you find one that you really enjoy. We feel very lucky to be in this one.

@DeborahDiane I think the main trouble is that we are very happy here and it would take a lot of effort to get rid of a lot of the outdoor bits and pieces.

That certainly sounds !like an ideal place to live. I also live in a community but it's not a retirement one so there's a mix of young and old. We don't have any amenities other than grass mowing and snow removal.

@Marilynda1225 - Ahh! When I was younger and lived in a multi-generational community, I would have loved lawn mowing and snow removal. That would have been terrific amenities. I love anything which makes my life easier!
