Depression, said the Health Department in my country, is the root cause of suicides. Today is the World Suicide Prevention Day and I just attended a press conference regarding this matter. Suicide is not a culture in the Philippines and yet in my region alone it has reached 108 as of this day. That's the reason the department made this program as part of the information campaign. Being lonely is normal but depression is not, but there is medication when someone is depressed. Depressed people needs someone to talk to so they put the hashtag "lets talk". What will you do when someone call you and said "will commit suicide"?

If you can talk to people who are depressed, it would be good. Often times depressed people want to be left alone and don't talk to anyone.

There are ways to get out of depression and those who are prone should take measures. No one has ever said that to me and they will not. They will do it and then show it (lol)

I hope that never happens to me I'd probably panic. I'd try to talk to him/her and ask where the person is - every second is important

I heard of cases in which teenagers demanded expensive gadgets from their parents & threatened to kill themselves if their demands were not met.

It is good that DOH has this kind of program because people suffering from this at times do not know they have the problem but ignores it until he cannot handle it anymore. I think the stigma of being tagged/diagnosed to having depressive manic syndrome can be bad at times because many are taking that as being crazy or mentally deranged person. But in reality that person only need is someone to talk to and not being judge at all.

@ilocosboy Our society has not accepted that as a mental health issue and should not be shunned away or be discriminated as such. I guess it will take a long time that the stigma of being labeled with that disorder will be accepted by many.

Maybe the passing of Mental Health law will be a big step in changing the stigma. People should come out and embrace them.

Stigma was also discussed during the presscon. Yes, it has negative impact to the patient being tagged like that which should not be case.

If someone called me and tell me that, I will talk him out of it. Even if it means being on the phone for a long time, I will not complain as along as I can hear what he has to say and give him my consoling advises.

@ilocosboy Could it be that because women are most likely to share their problems to their friends than to their families, while the men just keep it to themselves because they ashamed to share it?

That is one of the reason, I guess.

We should always be aware of the peiple around us. Maybe one of them needs help. Very true that depression has becoming more rampant nowadays in our country.

It is on rising alert all across the globe. The changing fabric of society and loneliness and materialistic approach creeping in every where is to be blamed for it to a large extent.
