I've been so wrapped up in all of these movies (and the fact that JJ has never seen any of them) that I've been ignoring music. After this one, you may wish I had continued. This countdown highlights lyrics that I think are very insightful, philosophical, or just downright true. Whatever you want to call it, I find myself quoting the line a lot. I don't necessarily have to like the song...in fact, one of my least favorite bands will show up in this countdown! As for now, let's get started with lyrics that'll make you nod your head in agreement. #10: Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows Make Life Difficult to See It's no secret that John Prine is one of my all-time favorite songwriters. I could do a top ten list of favorite lines from him...heck, maybe even a top 25! This line, from his classic "Souvenirs," is one I like to quote to friends who are having problems in love. Sometimes it's more than just the notion that the pain of love makes things blurry. Sometimes life (the "dirty windows" metaphorically instead of literally) makes things blurry. And, of course, "love" (a spouse or boy/girlfriend) isn't the only thing that can break a heart (contrary to the song that once said "Only Love Can Break a Heart"). Dreams dashed, health scares, or "issues" of any kind (from a bad grade at school to being passed over for promotion) can break a heart...and, in the process, "make life difficult to see." Those things can lead to bad decisions. And yeah, I've been there. I think everyone's experienced some degree of being able to "see life" because of something overwhelming them at one time (or several times). Thanks, John. You sure nailed this one. Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows Make Life Difficult to See From "Souvenirs" Written by John Prine Recorded by John Prine From Diamonds in the Rough, 1972 Prine performing the song with his friend, Steve Goodman, on Austin City Limits:

It's second on my list, second only to "Paradise." Probably you as well. Of course, it's hard to find a bad Prine song....

@FourWalls Very true. Paradise continues to be my own "signature song," along with Townes Van Zandt's Pancho and Lefty.
