When we used to have a mushroom 'season'

I think we would all agree that times have changed and especially as far as the climate is concerned. In the area of Western Australia where I live the first rains of the winter season would herald a flush of mushrooms in the paddocks. Some would come up in ‘fairy circles’ and families would drive slowly along the roads looking for white spots in the paddock that might signal some mushies. One year we sent a show-box full of mushrooms by post to our friend in the city. Another time we went out with our two sons when they were about four and six. They each had a blunt knife and a small bucket to put their mushrooms in. When we met back at the car a little later the younger of the boys was highly excited. There, in pride of place on top of his mushrooms, was a sheep’s skull. And now I have another chance to post a photo of Hercules.

So, were those magical mushrooms? We have a lot of poisonous mushrooms that will grow in the climate in which I live, so many times it is hard to tell if a mushroom variety is poisonous or not. So we play it safe and just don't mess with the mushrooms.

@TheHorse When I was in college, there were many weekend nights were we would go shrooming (looking for mushrooms to get high off of), but inevitably, we would always end up cow tipping instead because we never knew what kinds of mushrooms to look for! lol

@moffittjc @TheHorse Near a small town not far from us there are 'magic' mushrooms growing in the bush. If you're driving a kombi van in that area during the season, you are bound to have your vehicle searched by the police.

I can understand that but at the time the ones in the paddocks were safe. The 'bad' ones looked totally different.

We have mushrooms here but many are poison so I would never gather a mushroom, Hercules is looking fine and dandy. Is that your hubby practicing golf? Looks like he has his own course.

The ones in the paddock were fine to eat. Vince used to practice his golf up and down the fence-line and Herc used to like to come with us.

@RubyHawk He used to practice quite often but doesn't so much now. And the crows used to pinch his balls too which got a bit old although mostly I'd go the other end and watch for them.

I'm always afraid to collect mushrooms in the wild or in my yard. I'm just not confident I can tell the good ones from the deadly ones.

The ones that came up in the paddock were mostly okay although there were occasionally toadstools too. In our case, it was easy to tell the difference.

@JudyEv I would not dare to eat the mushrooms that grow in my lawn, they could be hallucinogen. Throwing the peeling does not help, but if there is the whole foot and you dig it into the ground it could work.

When we were making a casserole for ten for the concert, we were wishing Herc was around to eat the vegetable peelings. He would have loved them. The mushrooms on the lawn should be safe to eat? Some people throw out their mushroom peelings on their lawns in the hope of getting mushrooms later.

We only get fungi when it's humid. I would never trust myself to recognize an edible mushroom from a poisonous one. Boys would be thrilled with a sheep's skull. Ewww! Love and miss Her. . He was very handsome.

In the paddocks there weren't many varieties - just edible mushrooms and one type of toadstool which was easily recognised. The boys didn't eat them anyway. They just liked picking them.

We too get lot of mushroom on the farm. But then it is difficult for me to distinguish from edible ones with the poisonous ones! Though many workers on the farm who has a background of being tribals they can very easily identufy them and they enjoy the stuff! Hercules in the picture looks very handsome justifying his name!

In those days, there was just the one type of mushroom on the paddocks and the toadstools were easy to identify.

I pick about 20 different mushrooms in the woods. In the past the season was starting with the rains in September, but for the moment we have not had enough rains for mushrooms, and the same happened last year where we had quite no mushrooms during fall.

We don't seem to get as many varieties here. There are a lot of other fungi but you'd never chance eating them. It's a shame it's been so dry.

@JudyEv Yeah, Japanese people actually conducted studies about this and they have proven that mushrooms grow and multiply way much faster when there's lightning.

I suppose in a way they don't now as they are commercially grown throughout the year but before that, they appeared after the first rains. You couldn't buy them in the shops when I was young.

There was only ever the one sort that came up in the paddocks and we were very familiar with it. We don't seem to have the great variety of them that you do.

@TheHorse I don't know how many sorts we have here. I've never seen anything but 'ordinary' ones in the paddocks. There are a lot of different fungi in the bush but I'd never touch those.

They looked like the store bought ones but some would have a few tiny beetles in them and they were rarely as clean as those purchased in a store. The taste was the same but generally more so. Some mushrooms today are pretty bland.

Who is the golfer in the photo? Hercules seems unimpressed, lol. BTW- Speaking of a changing climate, I've got plenty of mushrooms growing in my yard from all the rain we've had if you'd like some. Of course, you have heard the phrase "Don't Eat the Mushrooms." In this case good advice!

I know you need to be very careful about what fungi you eat and which you leave alone. That's Vince (my husband) in the photo practising his driving. Herc cheered up when we started off down the paddock and he was able to try out some different pasture.
