In India we have a festival today by name Ganesh Chaturthi.
This day it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born.
He is a God with an head of elephant and he is considered as God who is to be worshipped first before starting any good event , as it is believed that he keeps away the bad omens by doing so.
This festival is celebrated all over the country by Hindus with great zeal and enthusiasm for ten days.
But in the state of Maharashtra this has taken the form of Social event and big decorated tents are made and huge statues are installed to worship.
People they pay visit daily to these places in thousands and on tenth day the Statue is immersed in Sea with all sacred rituals.
People enjoy a lot this festival! Have you heard about this? Do you know Who is Lord Ganesha and how he is born?

@LadyDuck , They start making these statues some three months before this day and they are sold in hundreds of thousands in each city.
We offer all types of fruits to him. it is believed that since he is having elephant's head he likes all the things liked by elephants. That is why we keep a tuft of grass also as an offering beside other things!

@Sreekala , yes in most parts of india they believe that! Because it is believed that moon laughed at ganesh's belly after he had nice feast and because of this ganesh suffers and the Moon is cursed that he will be inauspicious on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, so people avoid looking at him on this day!

Following is the list of countries where we can find evidences of Ganesha worship (source Wikipedia):
1.India (of course)
2.Srilanka
3.Nepal
4.Burma
5.Cambodia
6.Thailand
7.Indonesia (Java, Bali
8.Borneo
9.Afghanistan (high chances that Pakistan also had Ganesha temples, but most likely destroyed by now)
10.Tibet (China)
11.Japan
There are some claims that Aztecs temples in South America also had some elephant faced God. But it is yet to be proved if it was indeed Ganesha worship.
Happy ganeshchaturthi

@stapllotik a big list indeed. During Gupta dynasty and Harshavardhan, Indian culture spread to many parts of South East Asia.
And Ganesha worship might have been there in South America as older civilizations too had trade and cultural ties.

There is such an interesting story of Lord Ganesha's birth and my younger loves to hear it again and again. It was a pretty busy day from yesterday in preparation and celebration. My younger daughter made a Ganesha idol out of clay and we worshiped it today.I have two posst about the same.
I am too tired with all cooking and preparation for pooja. Just relaxing after a hearty lunch with friends and family.
How did you celebrate it?

In fact this festival was given a shape of social festival by Lokmanka Tilak in that state. They used to install the big Ganesh idols in public places and people used to gather there to pray the Lord. And this used to be the way of gathering the people to discuss the activities to be followed for the freedom of the country by the Indian leaders. That is to say this opportunity used to spread of freedom fighting and relevent details among the prople. The tradition is still goes on like that, though India got its freedom from British.
