We are leaving in a few hours to go to Ravensthorpe in the south-east of Western Australia. They have a combined Spring Festival and Wildflower Show each year so we’ll be staying with friends and attending the various functions that have been planned. Tomorrow there is a street parade which will be compered by a friend of ours from the endurance riding community. In small towns, and big ones I guess, people can wear many hats. The following weekend we’ll be attending an endurance ride but will be manning a post rather than taking photographs. ‘Manning a post’ means we’ll be at a checkpoint, ticking off the riders as they come past and sending in their numbers via a two-way radio. However before that we have a concert in Perth to attend and a Poetry, Pies and Port night to go to at Yabberup. We’ll take the caravan to the latter then continue on to Collie to be at the ride by 7.30am. You may recognise the little girl in the photo as the one hugging her horse a few posts back. This was taken at the next ride but she still seems to be enjoying herself doesn’t she?

She's definitely enjoying herself. I love learning new things from the many cultures here, and have to laugh at your phrase - ticking off the riders - which here ticking anything off would be making them angry. However, I do know what you mean. Thank you for a little humor this morning.

'Ticking off' can mean that here too but as you guessed in this case it means accounting for everyone and making sure they are not lost or hurt on the track somewhere.

Interesting that here we are preparing for a dry Summer-Autumn time and then winters, and you folks are getting in the Spring spirit and later Winters. You would be quite busy in the next few days. By the way, The Indian cricket team would be visiting Down Under for a cricket series- later in November/December this year. After 1-4 defeat by England, Indian team would be under immense pressure to win. Aussies will have to cope without having the services of Steve Smith and David Warner.

@DeborahDiane I think some of their bottoms do get very sore.

I also say it is a good thing the riders don't have to have a vet check as almost none would pass.

Yes, I'm sure you would. The shorter distances in particular are enjoyed very much by the riders. It's mostly the more ambitious ones who tackle 160 kms (100 miles) in a day.

Thanks. We did enjoy it. There was a very nice little Shetland in a sulky in the parade and a pair of Clydesdales as well. They don't often have many horses in these sorts of parades.

I don't think we're going to be able to make the Poetry, Pies and Port night as we'll need to be at our checkpoint about 7.30 the next morning. It just isn't going to work. So now we're going to the concert in Perth then home to pick up the caravan and go to the ride.
