My husband the book

Yeah. My husband should write himself up as a Reader's Digest special. Maybe he'd make enough money to pay off the house that we're renting out right now! My dearest partner happens to have no eye sight. Nada. He also is a very capable person and a total love. He worked hard and first got an engineering degree at a university. He is a scientist at heart. Then he spent about twenty years attempting to get others to believe that he was and is a capable person. He did not demand a truck driving job. He did insist that he deserved pay equal to others in his class. Finally he went back to another university and worked hard and earned a Master's degree in adult education plus he spent two years interning as an unpaid counselor. All that and looking again to try to get his family above the poverty line, he went to the Lighthouse for the Blind cause they said they were hiring. He said he'd gladly supervise folks in exchange for a pay check. The Lighthouse said NO. Supervisor jobs are for the sighted. You belong in the conveyer belt line, putting things together. Hubby said some unflattering things back. He discovered that there was a state registry for jobs. He filled out applications and more applications. One man finally told him that he would not hire him and why?? Cause hubby did NOT have a driver's license. Hubby went to the governor and told that office what was up. Right after that hubby got a call. To an area we really did not want to live in but hey, a job call is indeed a job call. So here we are. Nineteen years later. Three houses later- we really did go up in the world. (Hubby should have also gotten a degree in Economics. He knows how to make a mortgage go away.) Nineteen years at wearing a social worker hat. He started thinking he would work in the aeronautics field. Hah. One never knows.

@celticeagle Due to his getting work later than most folks he has to work longer to get a decent retirement. He has started having diabetes issues that worry me.

@celticeagle Something is sure going on. He's been dealing with weird stuff like leg ulcers. I hate how hard it is to get into a doc and often its not a real M D.

He is a fighter and a survivor. You deserve a lot of credit also. It could not have been easy for either one of you.

Your husband is a wonderful success story. Unfortunately people do not like books with happy endings.

He should be proud of himself, it is not easy to overcome the prejudices that others have when it comes to letting those with no sight (or hearing) to do the jobs that any person with those can do. Of course, driving would be challenging but with today's tech he could teach a self driving car to perform, right?
