History is said to be a great teacher. However, what all we are taught in History is important, as well as at times, what we do not know, or what is not covered is equally so. In 1741, King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, who had ascended the throne of the kingdom of Travancore(in current day Southern Indian state of Kerala) in 1729 had built a large army of 50,000 soldiers and embarked on imperial expansion, beat a Dutch naval force of big ships with huge firepower and skill. He did face an initial setback but came back and fought and won. The setback was very big for VOC or the Dutch East India Company, and thus in a way it helped the British East India Company and later the British Empire to take control of the Indian subcontinent. This defeat rankled the Dutch East India Company's worldwide initiatives too. Yet, I did not get to learn this in my History classes. And I wonder even if College History students would get to know this. Somehow, much of what we learn in History has a bias of our erstwhile colonial rulers- The British Empire. Later on, the ruling parties as well as Intellectuals- many of them with Marxist leanings did not include many of the historical Indian empires and kings who defeated the invaders or colonists. I even got to saw a video shared on WhatsApp on this. Some similar things might have been propogated in other colonies of the imperialists powers in Asia, Africa and probably Latin America. Perhaps it is a time when people learnt more about their own country; in my case India and the past bias and theories favouring one group over another or the imperialist powers need to go away. Comments invited- positive as well as negative(but not venomous please!) Source:
It was the first victory of an Asian kingdom over a European power.

Most history being taught lean more towards the West, people get stuck with ancient Greece and Rome while ignoring the fact that significant events and discoveries were also taking place in China, India, and Southeast Asia. Later history that we know were also written in the perspective of Westerners in my opinion.

@louievill I read somewhere that when many African places were being colonized, it was propagated across the world by the imperialists that most Africans were very backward tribal communities who had no sense of culture and that they need to be taught by the white colonists. However, later on, many historians and research folks found that many African cultures had great empires- many had sophisticated systems and some even had matriarchal strongholds. This has been similar across Asia and Latin America as well.

@louievill and isn't it strange that even with such old connections, Indian and Philippines' folks meet so less? Why not have more cultural interaction? Perhaps not to the linking of the stronger global and some local leaders?

@louievill it can be done but will need some major effort by a lot of civil society people.

It is good to hear about this Indian King fending off the Dutch attack. Quite a feat to be sure.

Yes and if it were not due to that video on social media App- WhatsApp, I would not have come to know about it. And I think world over, many facets of world history are either removed or watered down for the convenience of a few.

@Courage7 thanks. You know one thing I admire Americans (and some Europeans too) that in the present day situations, as well as during colonial times, many stood for the rights of indigenous people and against many exploitative and cruel colonial acts and practices!
