He attended the King at his death, and then the king's son thereafter

I have talked about this before, but I've done a bit more digging. Not a lot more, mind, but enough to get a better idea of what that ancestor from long ago did. He appears to have been a very opinionated man, but his opinions weren't always favored by the Government. He had published several sermons, and I suppose if I was so inclined, I could look those up. I am not so inclined. Anyway, I doubt there is a portrait to be found of this man. Though if there were, I'd be happy to find it. I'll link to one of the better write ups on who he was.

I wonder if you check more with the college that he was an alumni of that you might find a picture of him.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ......That's true. Just a thought. Thought maybe there would be a portrait of some event or something special at the college.

@celticeagle It's possible, but even so, I wouldn't know exactly how to look.

I'm not so sure... I don't know how things were back then, but I'm not sure that portraits were painted of the graduates...

@AmbiePam Until someone invents a time machine, this is the best I can do. Though, if one is ever invented, I would be happy to tip tap away to times unknown.

It seems that he was a Priest who married Frances, the youngest daughter of John, Baron Savile of Pontefract. A pretty important man.

Yes, indeed. From what I can read of the supposed life of John, The Baron Savile of Pontefract (him being the first), he probably had quite similar political views to his son in law, or atleast the same type of personality, which might have been part reason for the match between Thomas and Frances. Either way, it's very interesting to read of these people. It makes the gap between centuries seem not so wide.

@ScribbledAdNauseum 600 years are nothing in history.

Family history is weirdly fun and interesting. Make sure you do your own research though ... honestly, ancestry.com/uk is full of family trees of differing opinions and innacuracies. Which of his children are you descended from?

My grandfather is the one doing the research, and I think he verifies it on another site as well. I'm not quite sure. He has come across a lot of bumps and people trying to claim that our more recent ancestors were part of the revolutionary war. There's a program here, DAR "Daughter's of the American Revolutionary War" and there are people who are trying to claim some of our ancestors were part of it so that they can get into the program. Either way, my grandfather verifies a lot of things through the dates of supposed events and doesn't take much stock in what other people claim, especially if they have a big, theatrical story behind it. As for which of Thomas and Frances' children we descend from, I'm not sure as I don't believe he's told me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum your grandad sounds sensible. My Father thinks he's descended from a Lord. Idiot.

Being Chaplain to a king in those days was not easy.

That would not have been the only thing "not easy" in those days, but of course I understand what you mean. It makes me glad to be living in a time of religious freedom. Though..
