Maximum 90 Km./hr.

Years ago I was stopped (just warned not ticketed) by a cop for driving below (75 kilometers per hour) the maximum speed of 90 kilometers per hour along the highway. I told the cop that I was just following the maximum speed sign. Was I right or wrong? Well, maximum is a Latin word. It means greatest, highest. So what I understand is we should not be driving above the maximum speed (90 kilometers per hour). It does not mean that we should not drive slower than 90 kilometers per hour. Would it not be better if traffic signs appear like this: MAXIMUM SPEED – 90 Km/hr. MINIMUM SPEED (meaning slowest) – 85 km/hr. If there is a maximum speed, there should also be a minimum speed. Do I make sense? Anyway, I could not find a 90 km/hr sign, so I posted the one that I have - 60km/hr. to complement my post and to show that in Alberta the word maximum is used instead of speed limit.

@antonbunot Yes, I think you're right that if the Maximum Speed is 90 then it's but rational that you can go below that. Bottomline is that they did not put what they really meant on those signs.

@antonbunot Perhaps a better way to put on the sign would be "Maintain 90 KM/Hr".

The Swiss signs are a reminder of the "maximum" speed limits when going through a "city", on a normal road or on a highway. There is not a "minimum", but the rule is that you must not be a nuisance for the other vehicles. If you are alone on a road, you can go at 20 km/hr if you like.

@antonbunot It seems fast enough on a slow lane. I have to scream all the time "slow down" to my husband. I do not drive, if the loses his driver license we are lost.

Okay . . . but I was driving 75 kilometers per hour on the slow lane . . . maybe the cop just wanted to remind me to drive a bit faster . . hahaha

Yes, 90 KM maximum means that we should not go above that speed and not that we need to go that speed. So, even if he ticketed you you could have contested it and would not have had to pay the fine.

I'd rather you drove a little slower so that if something awful suddenly happened you have time to cope. Stupid cop.

Speed signs here give the speed you mustn't exceed. I guess slow drivers are nearly as much of a danger on a highway as speeding ones.
