Diary 18th And 19th September 2018

Diary Tuesday 18th September 2018 Another day of voluntary work handing out leaflets to Freshers students to promote the mental health awareness 1 In 4 Movie festival. There were fewer new students around today so I got to finish earlier. I was then treated to an expenses paid lunch. With the community centre Annual General Meeting pending I popped in to find out what time it started tomorrow and came home. Diary Wednesday 19th September 2018 My third day of giving out film festival flyers, and busy again, and afterwards I went to the AGM meeting learning that the centres grants and lottery funding has been drastically reduced plunging the 26 year old centre into a crisis it might not recover from. I do hope they endure. In the evening I went to the atheist meeting which I found very badly chaired, with members interrupting one another's questions and points and that it was hard to even get points across over the babel. Some commentators went way off topic with the chair making zero effort to draw things to order or make sure everyone could speak freely. I seriously wonder if I'll bother going again. Suggest that you chair the meeting next time.

@Kandae11 Their chair is an elected officer, and he may be stepping down soon. I hope so

@arthurchappell That is exactly the same thing we are hoping for in the U.S., regarding our President! Small world, huh?

What a shame that the funds have been reduced. This is happening for many places and some are obliged to shut their doors forever. I would not go away to the atheist meetings.

@LadyDuck some members get very rude as they obviously know others are trying to contribute to the discussion too but still hog the attention to themselves

@arthurchappell I easily imagine it was. When everybody tries to speak and there is not a clear order to follow is disappointing.

It's too bad about the atheist meeting but at least you got a free lunch this week...Not really because you did do work but the work was voluntary, so was it free or not? These are the kinds of questions that keep me up at night.

@xander6464 I can claim travel costs for voluntary work, and food if working more than three hours - it is for an educational charity so not really a wage but obviously a form of reward for services rendered

@arthurchappell So is a reward really the same as compensation? Are deductions for expenses incurred during voluntary work really a form of payment? Oh, I know that there are legal definitions that answer all these questions but they aren't really answers, they are just manmade conveniences. Or they might be answers but we don't know that they are the real Truth. At least I don't. So these are more questions to keep me up at night but that's OK because I've been getting too much sleep lately.

@xander6464 I think the expenses and food allowances are essential as volunteers would struggle if put out of pocket and that would mean fewer people would volunteer which could crush charities and non-profit making groups - it is a necessary evil

A badly run meeting can be bedlam. A good chairperson really makes a difference to a meeting.

They could have agreed on at least one point they assert -There is no such thing as God!
