Just a quick post to say the missing meerkat kit which I wrote about recently has been found and returned to the Perth Zoo and its mother. The baby meerkat went missing a couple days ago and it wasn’t clear if it had been stolen or taken by a bird of prey. After issusing a search warrant to the occupiers, a house some two hours from the Western Australian zoo was searched and the meerkat found inside. Zoo authorities are saying that securitymeasures will be revised. It seems like they need to be. The photo is from Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo, New South Wales.

Glad to hear it was found safe! Would a meerkat even make a good pet? I know they're cute and all, but are they able to be domesticated?

@JudyEv Although they are wild animals, some people have successfully domesticated and kept raccoons as pets here. They are amusing and clever animals, maybe on par with a cat but they can get destructive or vicious as they get older.

I have no idea but some people never think past 'I'd love to have a meerkit as a pet'.

@snowy22315 I have a book about raccoons that didn't quite become pets but were very tame. It was called 'Raccoons are the Brightest People' by Sterling North.

@JudyEv May be those who got the baby thought they could have been caught and preferred to bring it back.

@amadeo @LadyDuck Yes, it seems it was stolen but it couldn't have been a very secure area. Perhaps there was some CCTV footage or someone knew about the theft.

@LadyDuck It said on the news that it needed special feeding so perhaps they thought better of keeping it.

Good grief someone actually stole it. What morons! I hope that they have the book thrown at them. (War and peace hard back version would be a suitable choice)!

It was a really silly thing to steal the meerkat kit. I don't know how they thought they'd be able to keep it alive.

@arunima25 It was found two hours away from the zoo. The police must have been given a tip off.

Do they believe that it was stolen? I do not think a baby meerkat can escape from a zoo.

So meerkat was taken by some people who had visited the Zoo? It was a security lapse in this case.

@JudyEv did you know that The South African MeerKAT radio telescope is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere - we popped in there on our last journey to Sutherland last year = Fascinating and I love that they called it MeerKAT, just as the meerkats sit on the sad in the barren areas

I haven't heard any more about it such as why they stole it or what they hoped to do with it. Perhaps they just thought it would make a nice pet.
