The Methusalah Gene

Women live an average of five to ten years longer than men. There are several reasons for this. 1. People who are six foot tall don't live as long as those who are less than six foot tall. The Methusalah Gene is a mutation that appears to decrease the cells use of a growth hormone insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) and results in people who tend to be smaller and have a longer than average life span. 2. Heart disease is a big killer of men. Higer levels of estrogen protects women. 3. Men who live a life of crime may die sooner due to conflict or homicide. 4. More men die from drinking to excess, suicide, respiratory cancer and coronary disease, injuries and cirrhosis of the liver. 5. Men have greater immune challenges. Women tend to be born with longer telomeres which are things at the end of chromosomes which act as an index of cell age. People with these tend to live longer. And so the cells that produce your immune system can function longer and healthier. And they also have more muscle mass which mean more caloric intake affecting their metabolism and wearing out their stem cells sooner.

So that is why Yoda lived 800 years.

There are many things that go into longevity, and these sound like quite a few. As @koopharper says you also need to look at the life expectancies in your family.

Well - bad news. I'm six foot five. On the other hand, my family is relatively long-lived. So I'm not too worried about it.

Here I am at 5'10", don't live a life of crime, had congestive heart failure, smoke and drank to excess, no immune challenges and 83--guess there are exceptions to every rule or, like most studies, it depends on what is being sold!
