Why Was I Never Told?

I went to walmart today and I seen my sister in law there, she told me that my brother has melanoma skin cancer and about his treatment. I let her know that our sister has had melanoma twice. I added this maybe hereditary and she said it is, your mother died from it. WHAT? She told me that he said she had a mole on her back and it was melanoma, well I remember that mole and I remember it being cancer, but I thought she had breast cancer and that was what killed her, she said she did but it came from the melanoma. I reckon I never asked the older siblings the right questions growing up. This brother is 9 years old and I have a sister than is 14 years older than me. They never told me and Now I have to call my little sister to tell her because we always listed she died of breast cancer. Have you ever had anything like this happen?

you are right things like this should be known to family if this is hereditary or in the genes. So that you will know the symptoms or you will know what you should avoid things like that

These things happen. I had a cousin who had ovarian cancer which we all believe killed her but a bunch of family members say that she was killed by another disease

It is understandable if you were on the younger side when she passed. But it would be better for your medical records to change it. They then know that it could be hereditary and to test for it sooner if needed.

First time I have heard of such confusion. Hope you get it straightened out. I am trying to figure your family out you are saying that you have a brother who is 9 years older than you, a sister who is 14 years older than you, then there is you and a sister how much younger than you?

I'm sure that was quite a shock to you. Hopefully you can get it straightened out on your family history medical records.

No I never had anything like this in my life. They might not have told you because you were a child at that time and thought you might not understand the things.

No. But some people in the neighborhood told the kids that their father left abroad but the truth was he was killed.

Why should they have told you one thing instead of another? Melanoma can be hereditary.

@andriaperry This is true, when we are kids we cannot know what causes some problems.

I knew about the lumps under her arms, when she found the first one she asked us if we felt it, we did but we were little and didn`t know what cancer was.

It seems crazy that, many years ago, people didn't talk about these sorts of things. Some of the information could be important.

That is terrible, there is no excuse for not telling you the exact type of cancer that she had. I can mean early screening for the rest of the family, but also it shows respect. Lying about things is disrespectful.

That must have been a huge shock. I can't recall anything like that ever happening to me, although I never knew what autoimmune disease my grandma had (which eventually killed her due to kidney failure) until I was older.

I just read an article about an actress (Jane Fonda), found out from the news, that her mother took her own life. (Guess it was just news??? but it would be sad if that was true.)
