Happiness is a Balanced Checkbook

The end of the month approaches. That means all of my bills have cleared the bank, and what I say I have in the bank and what they say I have in the bank should match. And it does. I have a "system" of sorts for making sure things are balanced. I keep my "cents" at zero. If I go to the grocery and spend $27.38, I'll come home and transfer $2.62 to savings to make my checking balance an even sum. It also mounts up in savings over the course of a month (or a year). It all starts anew next Monday, with the first of the month, the VA deposit, and the scheduling of the bills. But for right now, my checkbook is balanced. First heard this song when Steve Miller covered it on The Joker:
This comes from two compilations of short films musical filmed for television in the early 1950's "Rhythm 'n' Blues Revue" and "Rock 'n' Roll Revue" (called ...

Steve Miller has some of the coolest song titles among Rock n' Roll artists. Why not add another cool title by covering this tune. A unique way to keep that checkbook in tune. With a system like that you can "Take Your Money and Run."

I don't do the bills and it is better that way. My credit score has gone up 400 points since I've been with my husband and let him deal with my finances. Now the deal is that I spend the money and he pays the bills.

I like that philosophy! Almost worth getting married over. Almost.

@FourWalls It is better that way. I get $100 a week into my checking account as "fun money". The Amazon account and Old Navy/Gap, UnderArmour, etc. accounts are already linked to credit cards. The Amazon account is the dangerous one. I've been known to make up to 3 orders in one week. I keep waiting for my husband to change the Amazon password (we share a Prime account), but he hasn't nor has he said anything about my spending. Guess we are doing well enough that my purchases aren't hurting the finances. YOLO

Yeah, I remember their songs. My check book stays balanced after I pay all my bills. Usually I have about $1.50 left after buying groceries with what's left after paying bills. Not enough to put into savings but at least it's not a negative amount.

It's always good to get the cheque book to balance. We don't have one any more.

That sounds like a cool system you've set. I may copy it but alter it a little. I might do it manually counting cents lol

My wife takes care of keeping our bills paid and checkbook balanced. My technique for such was too casual for her. I never missed any bills or overdrafted the account but she just couldn't stand it the way I did it so she took over. Now she has spreadsheets and schedules and projections going out months. I never have any idea where we stand. As long as the ATM spits out a few bucks when I need it, I'm not going to complain.

That is great news and you can be so relieved. I just pay what I need to pay online and the rest is paid along with my rent which includes utilities so I am good that way. Interesting song Never heard it before.

Good to be in the black or on an even keel in the bank.
