CONGRATULATIONS to our favorite cat slave, JJ! Today (9/24) he joined THE CLUB!!! What club? Why, the I Survived the Colonoscopy Prep club! The worst thing about a colonoscopy is the prep. It's a "fun-filled" day of drinking goop, eating nothing except jello (and no good flavors, either, because you can't have anything with red dye in it) and chicken broth, and making an astonishing discovery that your body can produce nearly as much excrement as the average politician!!!! The actual colonoscopy? You either sleep through that, or you get to watch them probe your deepest recesses on a monitor. Hopefully they'll even give you all those 27 eight-by-ten color glossy photographs that Arlo Guthrie once mentioned, so you can make them your Facebook profile picture!! Okay, all joking aside for a moment, if you're over 50, get one. The best thing about a colonoscopy is that it gives you peace of mind from a very common, yet very treatable, form of cancer. It'll also clear up your sh*tty outlook on life for a day! Congratulations, JJ! Oh, sure, you can laugh about it now....

Congrats and welcome to the club JJ. Not everyone sleeps thru it. I actually know of 2 people who woke during the procedure. One person told me that she woke up twice. That would be enough to scare me out of having it done had I heard it before I had mine done.

@CarolDM — they kept my mom awake during hers. I’ve been knocked out all three times, in contrast.

If you are over about 65 here, they send you a kit. It's relatively simple and you send a tiny sample of excreta to the address given and if it's all clear you can avoid a colonoscopy. I've just done my second one and it's come back negative so that's good. My husband has colonoscopies regularly so I do know what you're saying although I've never had one - yet!

I've been through this test and the preparation is the worst part. They put me to sleep, until it was all over. Thank God, it's only required about every 5-6 years! I'm glad J.J. got this over and done with. It's a terrible test!

Yes but the prep is better. I have a family history so I know what it is like to not have good results. Such an important test to have.

I joined that club in 1987. Having finally been diagnosed.with Crohn's Disease after several miserable years, and having obtained some amazing relief by taking prescribed steroids, I was furious that the colonoscopy a few weeks later to confirm the diagnosis would involve my becoming a prisoner in my own home once again due to having all those laxatives. On a lighter note, the procedure was performed by the appropriately-named Dr Fisher. I believe that's called nominative determinism.

I am not in this club, I have never been probed. But ya know what, I think I seen a test that does not include invading my back door. I will check it out, first.

There's a test that can check your stool without any prep or camera action. It's for people with no risks (like a family history).

This is too funny. But a serious matter and I am glad you are talking about it. So important and the prep is better than it used to be.

Absolutely. The stuff I had for my first one was awful. The Miralax & Gatorade was a breeze.
