The Two Bastrops

What are bastrops? In this case the name of two towns – Bastrop Louisiana and Bastrop Texas. They were both named after Felipe Enrique Neris a Dutch nobleman whose title was the Baron de Bastrop. He played an important role in getting the future Lone Star State set up. The amusing part of this story however, is that Neri turned out not to be a baron. Experts believe that he was actually Philip Hendrick Nering Bogel who had been a tax collector in Holland and left that country when accused of embezzlement. Once he got to America he turned himself into a Dutch nobleman. So the two towns actually have fictitious names so to say but imagine if they were named after his real name the two towns might have wound up being Bagel Louisiana and Bagel Texas if anyone misspelled his actual name so it is just as well that there are two towns named Bastrop. Has anyone heard of these towns?

The Bastrop name is easier to pronounce than what its actual name could be.
