Expecting Kid to Have a Tough Day?

News went around today that just before the public schools closed down for the hurricane an elementary school student showed up at lunch with a sack lunch from home and the beverage he pulled from his lunch bag was a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade. For those who don't know, Mike's Hard Lemonade is an alcoholic beverage with about the same alcohol content as a similar amount of beer. As to how the adult beverage got into the student's lunch has been the matter of much speculation since the investigation is still ongoing, or so I've heard. What are your theories? Was mom in a hurry and just grabbed something from the fridge without looking? Did the child pack their own lunch and just took what looked good? Or was whoever packed the child's lunch thinking the kid was in for a rough day and would need some liquid courage?

Yikes!!!!Hopefully the kid packed his own lunch and thought it was lemonade. Has anyone asked him?

I haven't heard the details of the investigation into the matter. We heard about the discovery from a friend who teaches at that school and was in the cafeteria when the beverage was discovered.

@DianneN We often joke about having Margarita Monday's to get the week started off right.

@DWDavis I see. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to sneak a martini into my lunch bag.

Wasn't there a case, back when the idea of "hard lemonade" became popular, of a mother who ordered that drink for their child by accident? I don't know what the case is here, but I hope that it's a case of a harried mother, or a child who packed their own lunch.

Considering the neighborhood the school serves, there is a very good chance either the child or a not much older sibling packed the lunch and did not know the difference between hard lemonade and regular lemonade.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I enjoy Henry's Grape Soda now and then.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It's the same with the grape soda. I limit myself to 1 a day.

Sounds like the kid packed his/her own lunch. How old was the kid? If really young then maybe s/he had no idea what hard lemonade really is.

Dang @DWDavis where the heck were his parents?? I know so little about youngsters anymore, should a 7 yr old know what hard lemonade is?

@rebelann I think the kid didn't know and thought it was just a regular drink.

From what I heard, the student was a second grader.

I vote for the liquid courage. The kid was trying to get up the nerve to go talk to a cute girl he had been eyeing for some time! haha

Could be. Though in that neighborhood the girls start picking out their baby daddies around 5th grade.

@moffittjc The saddest part to me is that not only am I not making it up, but the girls' mothers encourage the behavior.

I hope they did a home visit just to make sure everything was okay. How old was the kid?

I haven't heard the exact age, but it was an elementary school and I believe the child was in second grade.

@DWDavis I really hope they did a home visit. After something like that, I would for sure want to make sure everything was okay at home.

@thislittlepennyearns I hope they did, too, though I will never have any way of knowing. I can't imagine something like this would be overlooked.

It will be interesting to see what the investigation turns up. I could see a child thinking it was just lemonade.

I believe you're correct about it being an innocent mistake.

I do believe it was an accident. I cannot imagine a parent mistakenly putting a glass bottle in a child's lunch to begin with.

How did my lemonade get all the way from Ohio to there?!?! I wants it back. Oh wait. I see my empty bottle now. Hopefully it was just a mistake of some kind.

It must have been a mistake. The kid was probably told to grab a drink to go with his/her lunch and took the one that looked most appealing.

That's what I'm hoping. I cannot imagine a parent sending a child with such a thing as a bottle of booze.

It was obviously an accident. I hope the parents/carers don't get into trouble.
