My First Moose, At the Drive Thru!

My husband and I have been waiting to see a moose, since we purchased a home in New Brunswick almost a year ago. We had decided that there were no moose. We haven't seen even one..... On Wednesday morning, we were in the drive thru line at the nearest Tim Hortons......when.....I spotted a moose. "sleeping" in the back of the pickup truck in line, in front of us. Of all the places to spot our first moose, I would never have expected it to be in the drive thru line. (Hunting season, had just opened!) Within a few hours, my husband and I had seen two Canadian Moose and one Maine Moose.....all "sleeping" in the back of pickup trucks. Not quite the way I xpcted to see my first moose.....

That's a bit sad. He's a bit fellow isn't he? He should feed a family or two for a while.

I am sure the moose population is healthy enough to allow hunting season. Perhaps the moose population is too much and needs to be thinned.

@JohnRoberts I'm sure they wouldn't allow hunting if the creature was in danger of extinction. It just seems a bit sad to see a magnificent animal like chucked in the back of a ute.

Moose season had opened a day earlier. We have a healthy moose population in the northeast.

Poor moose, I would have surely liked more to see one alive.

I'd like to see a live one, but from a distance and ideally it not on the roadway. Cars hitting moose are usually fatal accidents.....for the driver of the car....not necessarily for the moose.

@Morleyhunt I can easily imagine that an accident with a moose can be fatal, those are big animals.

@LadyDuck Even large tractor trailers are usually demolished when they encounter a moose at high speed.

You've probably been close to several live ones since you've been here and just didn't know it. They look big and awkward but they move through the bush without making a sound. We saw our first one at night just past Shemogue. Thought I was coming up behind a deer until I realized his backside was higher than the roof of our minivan. He gave me a look of disdain over his shoulder showing me the biggest set of antlers I've ever seen in my life. Since then I've seen a cow and a calf just up the road and young bull between us and civilization. Judging by all the tracks I've seen back here, they've been keeping a close eye on us. There is no shortage for the hunters who successfully get tags from the New Brunswick government.

We've traveled across the province one foggy morning....we said...there were probably a dozen moose laughing at us ....I'm sure we'll eventually see one.

Funny how everybody, and obviously a lot of hunted game, make it to Timmies sooner or later. So very truly Canadian-I love it!!

@Morleyhunt Most of us eat beef, and chicken and fish, so its all relative. Imagine how dangerous it would be if we didn't have hunters, the roads wouldn't be safe to drive on for the livestock like this.

@Juliaacv so true. I certainly don't want to meet up with a moose on the highway when we are driving at 110kmh (the speed limit on the TransCanada)

I hummed and hand before sharing this photo. Some people take offense. Then I decided, why not? It's innocent enough....if people have a problem, it's their problem, not mine.

What a strange place to see your first moose! Sounds like the hunters are having a very successful season so far.

They would be rioting in outrage over this in the US.

We saw one in Maine. No one was outraged. Moose on the roads are a threat to life and limb....the moose always wins.
