Meet the In-Laws

So, today, my parents met my future in-laws for the first time. I've been with D for about 4 years, engaged for about 2 and a half. In that time, we have met each other's families, and some of my family have met some of his. Well, our children have met each other, and my children have met his closest family. We had been trying for a little while to get our parents to meet each other. I think it was my mum's idea. As we're getting married next year, we wanted them to meet before then. It was partly out of courtesy but also because we would prefer to be prepared if they didn't get on. We took them all out for a meal at a nice pub. I knew that D's dad would get on with everyone. I knew that my dad would be OK as long as he behaved. I wasn't sure about the mothers! Well, D's mum and my mum seemed to get on well. D's mum is a bit odd, and my mum is a grump who hates everyone. As it happened, they did all get on well. My parents and D's mum chatted to each other. D's dad was the opposite end of the table so he didn't really get to join in. My mum said that she would have liked to talk more to him but didn't want to shout across! So, all is good with them. I was getting a little annoyed with D's mum because she was going on about my wedding and the reception. Now, it's nice to be interested and that she wants to help. It does get annoying when I haven't even decided half the things she wants to know, and she doesn't seem to trust that D will sort out the bits he said he would. I am well aware that he needs to be reminded but she talks as if he just won't bother. She then 'phoned me about an hour after we'd got home - partly to thank us for taking them for dinner but mostly to continue going on about wedding planning! I was pleased about something D's mum said about the wedding, though. She said that my eldest step-daughter has been on the 'phone to her to try and arrange staying with her for an extended time so she can come to my hen night. Step-daughter is going to be my maid of honour but I wasn't sure she would be able to come up from where she lives for more than the wedding day. Apparently, she is quite excited about it. She hasn't told me this but I am happy! So, that's been my weekend. Next weekend, I will be abseiling from a 16 storey building (a charity event that had to be postponed because of weather). After a successful meeting of the parentals, I think an abseil will be far less of a challenge! How was your weekend?

My weekend is going well. And that is great that the parents are getting along. Best wishes for your upcoming marriage.
