Stuck with having to do the food shopping on my own

Today was hubby's day off from work but he decided to go in anyway. And then after work is over he is going to meet up with a friend of his that he's not seen for a while. That leaves me to do the food shopping for the week myself. I don't drive. And even if I did we only have one car, which he always uses. So, that means taking buses and doing plenty of walking and then carrying lots of heavy bags all on my own to stock the fridge. That is not fair! I've yet to leave the house... Knowing that I have to drag myself to the bus (about 20 min walk), then transfer to another bus, then walk just to get to the store, and then take two buses back and walk to a different store, and walk back home doesn't make me all that eager to go anywhere. But if I don't do this the fridge will remain empty and there will be nothing to make breakfast, lunch or dinner out of. However, even if I leave, there is only so much I can carry on my own... So what I can get at the stores will be limited to what I am physically able to carry, which means I probably won't be able to get everything that's needed anyway... Argh! I hate that. He should have made sure we go and get the shopping done together before he goes off to hang out with his friend... That's what I think. But he did not suggest that. So, I am left to do everything myself or remain with an empty fridge and nothing to make anything out of.

I like the Uber idea..then it won't be so hard on you.

It would make it easier I guess but I shouldn't have to resort to that. Hubby should be the one to go shopping with me when there's a lot of stuff that needs to be bought.

I do that all the time. I do not have a car, but I do not want one. Too expensive. I do have a good shopping basket that I take with me to help carry bags. It also has the ´stair wheels´ on it to get up the 3 flights of concrete stairs. I know it is a pain, but think of it as good exercise. My arms and legs are in good shape from it. Sorry to hear husband isn´t there to help.

I do not have that cart/basket thing. But even if I did I'd only be able to use it to go to a store by my house. I wouldn't be able to use it to go elsewhere that requires me taking buses. It would not be convenient dragging that thing onto and off the bus.

@lovebuglena Oh it is fine here, the bus and train accommodates the basket just fine and they even have a lift incorporated to go up and down and pick up the basket for me. I am sorry yours wont do that. Shame as not everyone has a car.

@Courage7 The bus can maybe lower the entrance but it's still uncomfortable to drag the cart. Subways don't usually have that. You gotta drag the cart up and down stairs.

Why didn´t you tell him? I would not do it, if I were you. It will be better to ask him to buy some bread and butter for the week after his job than to do all that work all by yourself. Can´t you call him and tell him to buy a few things on his way?

I did tell him the fridge is empty and we need to go shopping. To ask him to get something. By the time he is done with work and hanging out the store will already be closed.

Can you treat yourself to an Uber for the trip to the market and back?

I don't take Uber on my own. Or with anyone else really. Only it took when I was on vacation with hubby in Vegas.

What about Uber? I can’t imagine not driving. That must stink having to rely on other people to get around.

@NJChicaa I ended up not going anywhere. Wasn't in the mood.

Thankfully, NYC has lots of transportation, so I can get around to where I need to go, even if it can take hours. I have an Uber account but I only do because we used it in Vegas. I would never take Uber on my own.

@lovebuglena I think I’d rather Uber than deal with groceries on multiple buses

OMG! I am so sorry. I agree with you. I feel that your husband was very inconsiderate to take the car when you needed it for grocery shopping. He could have met up with his friend another way or time. Some men are that way, though. Good luck to you. I hope things go well

I don't drive so even if the car was here I wouldn't use it. But he took it to go to work. Without it getting to work would take a very long time. I remember another Sunday we drove up to see another friend of his (about a 1.5 hour drive each way). We got there around noon and left there after 10 pm. Even though I had told him we need to go food shopping, he did not want to leave earlier. I guess hanging out with his friend all day was more important than stocking the fridge.

@lovebuglena Hmmm. I see. I forgot that you don't drive. The cart/basket thing as @Courage7 suggested might be a plan to at least be able to get some things for the fridge. Also, I agree with @NJChicaa. Uber is a good suggestion and might cost less than doing all the bus travel. There's gotta be a better way

@lovebuglena I just thought of another way you can get food at home. you could order online. There's instacart or something. I sometimes get ShopRite to deliver to me when I'm not able to go grocery shopping. Try to look up online who may deliver food to you.
