How can an educated person suggest that? Marijuana is different, and opium is different. Poppy plant allow for heroine too. And that can mean more addicts, more crimes at home and outside, not to mention more people employed in drug trade since there are no jobs for ever growing population. We will be worse than Taliban. Taliban cared for religious dictat and did not grow that dreaded stuff. This man Navjot Singh Sidhu is already guilty of killing a man in a road rage 20 years ago. Why on earth is he even allowed to be a politician?
Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has supported an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in his demand to legalise the sale and cultivation of opium in the state. The suspended member of Parliament from Patiala, AAP's Dharamvir Gandhi, a dcotor, has been pitching

You can hope that will not really happen. That would not be right at all.

Poppy seeds and poppy seed oil also come from the "opium poppy." Are those food items illegal in India?

I hope so too. It is weird that a doctor is supporting it.

poppy flowers are different to opium, right? (I have lots of poppy in my gardens, from red (ordinary) to yellow orange (California).

Opium is extracted from Poppy plant. You might have to confirm from your local authority about growing them legally. It also has some resin coming from it, from which heroine is extracted.

Morphine is derived from the opium poppy. Where is it supposed to come from if poppy cultivation is not allowed? Of course it must be strictly controlled - just like diamond mines and money-printing presses.

@vandana7 It's a tough call to control something like this anywhere. But there are diamond mines in much less controlled countries than India, and every country has to print its money somewhere.

This is very bad, opium is not good, but heroine is the worst.
