I teach music, but I really like science too. A lot of scientists are also musicians, and probably vice versa too. Anyway, today one of the middle school girls was with my flute ensemble girls for practicing. She was studying hard for her science test. I told her I love science and asked if she didn't understand something. She pointed at the part of the textbook called "natural selection." She said, "I don't understand this at all." So I explained it to her and she got all excited that she now understands!
I think it's really important for us to have many interests even when they are not our major area of study. What do you like that is not related to your major or your job?

My interests today are close to those that I had when I was at school, namely English literature, History and Geography. However, I also take a keen interest in other things, such as Astronomy and Music. In terms of music, I have never played a musical instrument - my attempts at learning the piano came to nothing and I was never given the opportunity to try anything else - my school had no musical instruments in it! However, I thoroughly enjoy listening to music and learning about composers.

It is important to always learn and understand what we do not understand. I always find I learn something new on the Internet. I am interested in a variety of subjects and at times when I discover something I also get inspired to write about it.

When I was in college, I played tenor recorder in a recorder ensemble of which the other members were in the physics department. I really think science and music are kind of similar, or at least the brain functions we use are similar. I am a music education major but my hobby these days is seismology. I'm studying the plate boundaries and faults in Japan right now.
