...paper and always thought I'd go into journalistic pursuits. However, my life has taken other paths. Please share your journalistic experiences with me.

That's fun, too. I worked on anything to do with writing in both high school and college. Then I gave it up and went to work in the real world. Don't we all!

I worked on the newspaper when I was in school and I'm now a columnist for a suburban Chicago paper. Ultimately, I'd like to have a column in the Chicago Tribune, but for now, I'm happy where I am.

It's amazing that you can have your life all planned out, and then you meet someone that makes it veer in a completely different direction. To think that I could have been a famous journalist in a big city instead of a housewife in Dallas, IA. Would I really want to change it? Nah!

I have worked for two newspapers. When I was 17 I started writing for Vision – a voluntary youth paper in my country. I eventually became the editor of that one. Later the Catholic News – the parent paper for Vision – hired me to be their feature writer. I took the job for a year before going off to continue my studies. It was, and remains, the best job I’ve ever had. I actually touched lives in that job. Because of one of my articles a young man was able to raise funds for heart surgery. Others learned about valuable services and information from some of my features. It was very fulfilling to know that what I wrote may have helped and maybe even saved some lives. In my present school I’d written some articles for the school paper and was asked to edit a supplement, but I’m not ready to get back into that just yet. Maybe in my more senior years I’ll take on the responsibility.

Yes, you're smart to concentrate on your education. I think I probably spent too much time in college working on the newspaper, but I loved it. I started as a reporter and did absolutely every job there was until my senior year when I became editor. I never followed up on it, because I moved to a town where the pay was poor working for the newspaper.
