Watching my baby brother and sister I'd say I disagree. Kids enjoy receiving attention most of all, positive attention. They like being told 'thank you' or 'how nice of you'. My mother uses that to reinforce positive behavior and it works out quite nicely, my siblings love giving to others and are overjoyed when they receive those people's smiles in return.

I always took my nieces and nephews to buy their parents a gift, from them, shows them to give too.
