Heading for the big smoke today

'The big smoke’ was always the phrase we used if we had to go to the city. I guess the phrase came about from all the wood-burning stoves of the time.
I made an appointment for a skin cancer screening test. It seems a reasonable precaution given our Australian climate. Our UV (ultra violet) levels are higher than those in the northern hemisphere
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and is the most common cancer diagnosed. Over 12,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
While I’m ‘in town’ I want to buy a new ironing board cover and this time I’ve remembered to measure my board BEFORE I get to the shop. As my appointment is around lunchtime I might treat myself to a whopper junior at Hungry Jacks and a strawberry sundae. They are surprisingly cheap and very yummy.
Photo is of a sunset at Menzies in Western Australia's goldfield region

@LadyDuck I grew up with feet and inches then soon after I left school Australia changed to metric. While I'm reasonably good with most of it I'm not good with gauging lengths. I have no idea how tall I am in cms. I switch off once I have to think in cms and metres so buying something like sheets or blankets is really difficult. I'm glad I remembered to measure as the covers were all enclosed with just the measurements on the outside.

When I was child we didn't get to the big smoke too often and it was a bit stressful as we were really country people. We tended to pity those who had to live in the city. Since then of course I've lived in cities myself but have always been glad to get back to a bit of space.

Good luck on your skin cancer screening. Here in Florida, we also have a high incident of skin cancer due to our warm tropical climate and plentiful sunshine. I've spent way too many days out in the sun (both for work and pleasure), and I fear that someday I will pay for it. I go every year for a skin cancer screening, just to be on the safe side. If something pops up, I want the doctors to be able to catch it right away before it has a chance to take root and spread in my body.
Beautiful photo of the sky at sunset!

@moffittjc Thanks. I wasn't really worried but it's still nice to know there is no sign of skin cancers.

Good for you- you are wise to get checked, As a matter of fact I am getting a cell in question removed--not melanoma but a more harmless variety. It's a small patch on my right cheek from the sun shining down on that side while I drive. Enjoy your whopper and sundae!

@JudyEv Haha! Then why not? A treat is a treat anytime and at $5 you can't go wrong.

I think that skin cancer screen is a necessity for most people these days and a very good idea. I love that photo

@JudyEv — I get screened twice a year after a nasty sunburn while I was stationed in Hawaii. It’s painless and certainly worth the copay for the peace of mind.

@FourWalls That's what I thought especially when a lot of our friends have had cancers removed.
